In other news, while traveling through Mexico I decided to refer to all cattle as "beefs". As in "aw, did you see the baby beef by the shed?", or "gotta slow down; beef crossing ahead". Kara wasn't a fan, I don't think, but I really liked how a simple change in terminology put everything into perspective.
There's a fine chapter in Mario Pei's The Story of Language which discusses the names and terminology for beasts on the field as opposed to beasts on one's plate and its relationship to war. Something to the effect of the invader's (and winner's) terminology is kept for beasts on the field, while the "cruder" native terms are used for beasts on the plate. Examples were specifically drawn between the Saxons and the French, methinks. Mehistory blows and I read the book almost ten years ago but am re-reading it now.
