Finally wrote another short story. I had several ideas that I had left out of it, including the introduction of a young mischief maker named Lucifer. Enjoy!
Dio was delighted when he arrived home to find a gift, wrapped in velvet and held together by a bright red bow tie lying near the feet of his mother. He could hardly contain his excitement and frantically tore apart the package while his mother stood high above pleasantly watching. Dio looked confused when he held up a ball of mud and peered up towards his mother for an answer.
“Mother… I do not understand… is this a joke? What am I to do with a pile of Mud?”
“Dio… it is time you learned responsibility.”
Dio realizes what the meaning behind the object and sets it down as though it is toxic “But… but… “
“No “buts” Dio, your father and I both agree… your growing up… its time you go out and learn a thing or two.”
Dio remained quiet, sitting Indian style with his head resting in his hands, the look of his face was that of defeat and frustration.
“Well Dio?”
“Fine… but I don’t know how to start! Can you help me?” Dio pleaded with his mother’s sympathies by making a face.
She only laughed and said that he had to face reality, and he was at the ripe age to do so.
“What happens if …my world… goes to ruin?”
“Eh... we all have ruined worlds now and then… even your father has and he is the best in the business!”
“Really?” said Dio, astonished that his own dad who he thought invincible was not quite as infallible as he had thought.
“Yes… now go find a home for your world… you should be able to go out to sea and find a spot that hasn’t been taken yet… preferably near a sun Dio… I don’t want you creating life in the Void where the sadists like to create monsters.”
She looked back to Dio, only to see him rush away with his gift. She smiled and turned her attention to dinner.
Dio was examining different points of light as he traveled through a dark space in his transparent bubble. One point caught his attention and he swung his hand in a circular motion plunging him into a freefall that enlarged everything to reveal galaxies. Dio began circling a galaxy and nodded approvingly, he found the spiral shape to be perfect to his liking. With a wave of his hand he plunged into the galaxy and observed several solar systems as he continued his journey. Some had stars that were too old and ready to die and some were too young and could not provide enough warmth for what Dio had in mind. Finally he settled on a young star that was just entering its adult years. Perfect he thought.
He placed his gift between a planet enveloped in a thick atmosphere and one that was red and barren. He then sat watching his ball of mud orbit around the sun as he pondered what to do next. He had a million ideas but he did not know where to begin.
After awhile he decided to shape the landscape, he thought that at the very least he could make his ball pretty. He pinched together mountains, carved out grooves and filled them with water, and breathed in an atmosphere of his creation.
Then he sat and watched the planet. Storms rained life into the plants and the land changed its color and shape, but it was not enough he felt. Six days passed before Dio decided what to do next.
Dio scooped some mud into his hand and separated it into two different piles. He kneaded, squeezed, and pulled at the piles to create two kinds of the same creature. One had strength for labor while the other was graceful and caring when put together they would be made whole. Dio made a number of these creatures and then set them in a lush garden. They developed a tribe and began bearing children.
Dio watched with fascination, but after awhile a tremor came from deep within his body and he became aware of the growing discomfort in his bowels. After some fidgeting he decided that he could spare a moment to use the bathroom. He gave one last glance for reassurance and saw that the creatures were beginning to mine metals for tool making and some of the original tribes had settled in new areas of the world. They seemed safe enough.
Dio rushed home and relieved himself behind closed doors. He walked out feeling light, but realized he was quite tired. He decided a short nap could not hurt and drifted off to sleep.
A little while later his mother woke him.
“Dio… why aren’t you watching your world?”
Dio sheepishly defended himself that it was just a quick nap and nothing could go wrong.
“You do not leave a civilization alone in its infancy! Now go check on it… RIGHT NOW” thundered his mother.
Dio rushed back to the solar system where he had planted his world. He had only been gone for an hour, what could have gone wrong?
Dio found the planet in ruin. The sky was grey, the land was scorched glass, and the sea was dead with waste. He was overwhelmed with guilt when he saw signs that said, Where were you God?
