King of Diamonds
They say the King of Diamonds is the suicide king. They say that everyone has a card associated with them.
If someone were to look at the relationship between Ryan Dunn and Brandon Novak, no one would suspect the reality behind the façade.
Ryan Dunn, normally gentle and kind, all sorts of funny and a heart that often got him burnt. It was true that he’d had his fair share of bad relationships, one of which is forever immortalised in the form of a movie. But between the doomed relations with Lauren, to the brief fling with Angie and then the roller coaster with Novak, somehow Ryan remains untouched by the pessimism in his love life.
Brandon Novak, reforming junkie, wiseass and bullshitter. Somehow, through everything Brandon still has the ability to laugh at himself, but only he and his friends are allowed to. With the chip on his shoulder knocked off, and ideas that never really make it to anything, Novak is merely trying to piece his life back together.
But you wouldn’t think that it was Novak who held the relationship together, you wouldn’t believe that sometimes it was Ryan that needed to help getting out of the dark. You wouldn’t think that Ryan was a King of Diamonds.
With only three and a half years behind them as a couple, Novak already knows just how severe Ryan’s depression can get, and just how good Ryan is at pretending. It used to be Ryan who held the shaking Novak, whispering that it would be alright and that nothing would happen. Now it’s Novak who holds a shaking, bleeding Ryan, trying to comfort yet still not understanding.
With a King of Diamonds it’s hard to understand. With a King of Diamonds it’s hard to find a reason. With a King of Diamonds, it’s even harder to build a life.
