Middlesex might be one of the best books I've ever read. It is this awesome American epic about a Greek-American family and their deep secrets. The narrator is neither male nor female (or, actually, both male and female) and is very aware of the fact, often stopping to discuss the differences between male and female (narration and otherwise).
