I don't need any more reasons to watch Life, NBC's Wednesday 10pm drama starring Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi, but this show just piles them on every week:
1. The guest stars are really cool. Nina from the best season of 24 and the voluptuous Saffron from the brief but bright light that was Firefly put in appearances, but it was the wonderful Mr. Pope, last seen teaching business ethics at Neptune High, that really warmed my heart.
2. Prince of Persia gets game play screen time.
3. The LAPD computer tech who boasts that he can beat it -
"You think you can get to Level 10?"
"Detective, I'm thirty years old, I live with my mother, and I have a Captain Kirk costume in my closet"
- totally fails to get past Level 2.
4. "Pictures of Matchstick Men" has never sounded better.
The murder of four people, the downfall of a young man with a bright future, and the death of a son are all horrific events, but it was the quiet tragedies that were so striking in "A Civil War," like the desperation of Jeffrey Farmer for the love of his mother and the cruelty of Dani's father who forbid his wife from speaking her native language.
What I like so much about the writers it how they can extend this to the comic relief part of the episode, revolving around Ted and Olivia. Ted has gone from confident Wall Street tycoon to fumbling, insecure boy and whilst Olivia might believe that he is simply lovelorn, the fact is that his need for light is as desperate as Charlie's and his need for love is as desperate as Jeffrey's. The clown of his worst dreams, I fear for Ted.
I haven't kept up the overall mystery account for a very simple reason. NBC are broadcasting little clips of evidence during the commercials to which I don't have access. That's a shame because I liked the idea of keeping a running commentary on it, similar to what we had at MI.net for Veronica Mars. Hopefully, as word of mouth draws in more fans, somebody out there might take up the pleasant chore.
For those who love the music,
theevilpuppy has posted a great list of the
tracks used so far and hopes to keep it up to date.
On an unrelated note, my computer has always hated me, but it's turned psychotic. I now have, between 2pm and 6am (GMT), a bizarre internet connection crash every twenty-thirty minutes. Any ideas?
