I need to sort out my tags. I seem to have one for 'radio', one for 'radio 4' and one for 'radio drama' (and probably another for 'Drama:Radio'), none of which I seem to have used for a post I'm sure I remember making on the current Charles Paris Mystery, which finished last Friday and which I have just caught up with on the BBC iPlayer.
The author has not only freely adapted Brett's original, he's added some delightful in-jokes, particularly regarding Bill Nighy's current film role (in Potter 7, for those who keep up with such things -
Nighy plays Charles Parish, an impecunious lush actor kept more or less in check by his ex-wife, Frances, and his agent, Morris. Hence these two conversations:
CHARLES; Potter! Frances. Potter! This could be the pension plan I never had.
FRANCES: You're doing it already. Fantasising."
CHARLES: I'm a bit tall for a house elf, but I reckon I'd make a good Death Eater.
FRANCES: Please Charles..."
CHARLES: Joke.
He really should know how Morris, works by now:
MORRIS [on phone]: Good news on the Potter job.
CHARLES: Oh YES!!!
MORRIS: They do want you up there, and you'll be away six weeks.
CHARLES: No probs. Where am I going?
MORRIS: Cumbria I'm afraid.
CHARLES: For a gig like this they could film it in Dagenham for all I care.
MORRIS: Film? [fade]
CHARLES: In the same moment my dreams were shattered and my fantasy pension plan vanished faster than a small high street bank. It was Potter alright. Beatrix Potter. A ground breaking Arts Council adaptation of the Tale of Squirrel Nutkin. But it was work. And, hey, it was the lead!
And, for some reason I also have a 'Bill Nighy' tag. Now I have to decide whether to use it or delete it. Decisions, decisions....
