Watching the Detectives

Feb 20, 2010 08:47

Lil just posted the household DVD list in response to the current meme on the subject, and I'm presently watching my way through the latest addition to the list, The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes which is as interesting for its 70s casts, and production values as for the subject matter. This is the series that introduced me to Max Carrados (mainly through a masterly performance by Robert Stephens which does stand the test of time - though they didn’t pick one of the best stories to dramatise. At the time most of these stories were out of print - and it took me nearly 20 years to track down a complete Carrados. However, thanks to the Internet, and the expiration of copyright, I can now read my way through Baroness Orczy's Lady Molly Stories.

Now if only Guy Boothby's Simon Carne stories were available (though he is more a rival of Raffles than Sherlock Holmes).

book, detective novels, tv
