Summary: Sometimes we think that letting someone go is the most selfless decision that one can ever make. Especially in a situation where no one can help you except for yourself. But what if you came back and found out that the love of your life didn't just change in the way you've expected him to but also is in a more messed up situation.

Kris continued to be under the care of his dad after his mom and baby brother passed away. His dad become more distant with him though he didn’t fail to give him his basic needs and provides food on the table. Kris didn’t really mind the growing distant between them because he himself wanted to be just alone in his room-in this world.

He didn’t like to talk too and his dad not being around the house most of the time was just what Kris needed.

By the summer of that year, his father told to pack his things because they were moving to Albany while they were eating breakfast one morning. Kris looked at his dad and nodded. He didn’t know if asking why would matter that’s why he didn’t and just did what he was told.

He cried on their last day at the house because they were so many memories of his mom in it. Sad ones, happy ones… they were countless of them and Kris’ heart was aching to have to leave those entire behind.

When they were in Albany, his dad enrolled him at the public school and Kris was just terrified. He hadn’t been around people since he was in first grade. He was used to being alone without too many people around him.

His experienced in going back to normal school wasn’t really good. His classmates were teasing him for being weird and they laughed at his clothes, at his hair, with his big rimmed eye glasses and he was being bullied by being small and frail.

He cried the first few months of hearing mean words and insults from children his age but his father yelled at him by being a crier and weak. He said to learn to just ignore it and he would be fine.

And that was what he did, and after a few more months he was used to everything they were throwing at him. He didn’t try to make friends or do anything to be cool in the eyes of others. He just continued to be alone and did his best to be far away from everyone’s scrutinizing eyes.

When he started 7th grade his father told him to pack again and they moved to another state. They stayed in Arizona for year and a half. After that they moved to 2 more cities, Denver and Reno, where they stayed for a very short time 8 and 6 months. After that they finally moved to San Diego just before he turned 16.

He was basically used to moving by that time and being in new school almost every year. It didn’t surprise him anymore that he got the same reaction whatever state they were in and never even tried to have friends.

That’s why he was so shocked more than the bullying he had on his first day in San Diego high when someone rescued him from being bullied. He introduced himself as Neil, a sophomore like him too, after he roughly pushed the boy who was making fun of him.

He just looked at the offered hand at first because honestly he wasn’t really used to this kind of stuff. He was more used to being a laughing stock than being offered a hand. He knew what to do when he was being bullied, but this? No he didn’t know how to face things like this.

‘’Hey, you okay?’’ Neil asked worriedly hand still extended for a shake. Kris just looked at it like he was being faced with a poisonous snake.

‘’Uh, I-I’m, I’m … good? Uh-‘’

‘’Hey, hey, it’s okay…’’ Neil looked around and saw a bench nearby and said ‘’There, we, you just need to sit over there. You think you can walk to that bench over there?’’

Kris looked up at him frowning slightly. ‘’O-Of course, I… can.’’

‘’Good, let’s go.’’

When they reached the bench they both sat down and they were quiet for few moments until Neil broke it. ‘’Okay, so, let me say I’m sorry for those jerks who were making fun of you earlier. I hope they didn’t hurt you or something.’’ Kris looked up at him again like Neil was a crazy person. ‘’I’m Neil, by the way. Neil Lambert’’

‘’I’m Kris and… you don’t need to say sorry. Not your fault and you didn’t have to do that. I’m… really used with it by now.’’ His last sentence was almost a whisper but Neil’s heart broke from the tone of Kris’ voice when he said that. It was as if being bullied was normal and Kris was resigned to the fact that he would be bullied for the rest of his life.

‘’Kris, it’s not okay to be bullied. Don’t think like it is normal to be laughed at-‘’

‘’What would I do, Neil? Fight them?’’ he snorted, and then looked down at his lap shyly.

‘’Yes! Don’t let them just stomp on you.’’ Neil said sternly.

‘’Neil, I’m so thankful that you stood for me from being bullied today but believe me when I say it’s okay. It’s not really new to me, you know. I’m kinda used to it by now. So, really… I’m okay. Thank you, though. I really appreciate what you did back there.’’ He said shrugging slightly but giving Neil his first smile since moving to San Diego.

They became friends after that, a first for Kris in such a long time. It was awkward the first few times they hung out together because it was mostly Neil who’s talking and Kris was obviously uncomfortable. But Neil tried to make him understand or at least make him think that it’s okay to have a friend, to have someone beside yourself that you could talk to, to listen to, to have fun with. Though the last one
wasn’t even in Kris’ vocabulary much less doing something more than the trip of going to school and the returning to the home routine.

Neil was proving to be a good friend and he was beginning to feel that he could do this, to have someone who actually wanted to be friends with him and not making fun of him.

Kris wasn’t your typical teenager whom you see in your everyday life who wears a cool shirt, a baseball cap with trendy shoes. The thing was, Kris was pulled out from normal school in 1 st grade and home schooled by his mom since then. He didn’t have any friends nor went out to get some even when he was beginning to grow up. He was so attached to his mom that he forgot there was even something revolving outside their house. You add the ever so unappreciative dad that he had who would laugh and insult him whenever he made some move that wasn’t in his line of taste. So Kris dressed exactly like those people around him, much more like his dad from his neatly-combed from the middle-hair, to his shiny black shoes, to his loose corduroys up to his tucked in long sleeve shirt with suspenders.

He knew he wasn’t like the other kids but Kris was comfortable with what he was wearing and it made him think that he was obeying his dad by dressing and behaving properly.

It wasn’t easy for the two of them after his mom and baby brother died. It was too quiet in the house and too painful to even speak. They didn’t talk for almost one month- both just hiding in their respective rooms all day except when his dad left to go to work and he would be left alone in the house so that he could venture to his parent’s room and look and sniff his mom’s dresses that were still in the closet.

Losing his mom was so painful and traumatic at his young age. She was the only person who understood him, the only person who loved him unconditionally. She taught him everything, from behaving properly, how to read and write, to being patient and being content with what you have and not to ask for more. She also would always tell him that in this life you wouldn’t get anything if you didn’t work hard for it. That in life sacrifice was part of it and sometimes it was easier to just not expect something from someone that you love and only take whatever they could only give you.

She said life wasn’t always about happiness it was more of fulfilling your task as a person. Not all people would be lucky to have a fairytale of happy ever after it was rare but sometimes she believed that it didn’t exist in real life. She said being open minded makes you differentiate the fine line between reality and fantasy. That in the real world nothing was permanent, that everything was temporary and fickle and that if you thought someone could love you forever but in reality no one does. People were so quick to change their mind, their views, their faith and even what’s in their heart. She said Kris shouldn’t allow someone to make him think otherwise because he was just going to be hurt. He should just try to be the best that he could and be patient, if it worked then he’s lucky but if not then he was just like everyone
else and he’d get hurt.

As weeks passed by, he became good friends with Neil. They were always together every time they both had breaks from classes and during every lunch time. But Neil also made it his responsibility to defend him whenever he was being bullied by some students. Kris was so terrified the first time Neil pushed a football jock to the ground and threatened to make him eat his tongue the next time he’d be making fun of Kris. And how horrified he was when Neil just lost it and punched Kian, the football jock who led the bullying, in the mouth that got him sent to office and suspended.

Kris wasn’t used to someone defending him he was more used to acting like he's deaf and blind to get through the day. He didn’t know what to feel the first time Neil defended him and until now he was convincing him that being in school with him was more important than reacting to all those bully that would cost him to be permanently kicked out. Kris wouldn’t let Neil get in to more trouble because of him. He didn’t want the one good thing that happened to him in so long to be taken from him so prematurely. He wanted to enjoy being and having a friend even for just a short while.

Kris also noticed how he was feeling jittery when Neil’s brother, Adam, would approach them. Be it to rescue his brother from attempting to get suspended again or just checking up on him. He knew Adam was just concerned about his brother that’s why he’s around the corner nearly during each break just looking at them from afar. But that always made Kris more nervous and he didn’t understand why.

Adam never tried to speak to him whenever he comes near them. He would greet his brother but just like everyone else he wouldn’t even spare a glance in his direction. Not that Kris was looking at Adam’s face either to really notice.

As weeks went by Kris was kinda looking forward of seeing Adam everyday even from afar. He also found himself sneaking a peek at Adam’s hot boyfriend. He really got what Adam saw in him and understood why he was so in love with him.

Kris didn’t dream of having or wanting someone to be intimate with. He never had the chance to think something like that. His closest to being romantic was his nightly date with the beautiful and breathtaking nature that seemed to calm him from within. That sort of became a ritual for him, something that he couldn’t live without doing something that really makes him peaceful and happy.

Meeting Adam didn’t change Kris’ view about wanting someone. He wasn’t the kind who entertained thoughts about fantasy about something that you know you couldn’t have even if you died wanting to. And Adam was kind of fantasy, because in real world someone like Adam wouldn’t want someone like Kris. And Kris wasn’t a fool to even believe that Adam might like him. Not in million years, not in this
lifetime. Not even in after life.
