Summary: Sometimes we think that letting someone go is the most selfless decision that one can ever make. Especially on a situation where no one can help you except for your own self. But what if you came back and found out that the love of your life didn't just change just like what you've expected him to but also in a more messed up situation.
San Diego has been the third city that Kris and his father have moved in to in just 14 months. He and his mother were originally from Arkansas when his biological father was still alive. But when he died from a car accident 11 years ago his mother opted for them to move to Chicago and started their new life there without his father.
After two years, when he was six, his mother re-married again to a guy named Pierre. He was good and he treated him well so Kris didn’t really mind that her mother replaced his dad. He was also too young to really care about it.
But just few months later he started to hear some arguing behind the masters bedroom’s closed door, some whimpering, banging and sometimes the sounds of broken glasses could be heard. But because Kris was so young he really didn’t know what the problem was at that time. He’d just crawl to his bed forcefully closing his eyes in an attempt to block the sounds he could hear from the room next to his.
His mama seemed to be okay the next day and when Kris asked her about what he heard, she just hugged him tightly kissing his head and whispered ‘It was nothing, honey’.
The banging and whimpering in pain by his mother and the shouts of his Daddy Pierre became more frequent after that night. His mother became less vibrant and his Dad became a more and more hot- tempered man who easily snapped at any small things that displeased him.
He told his mom he was scared of Dad but she said there’s nothing to be scared of. She said that his dad was just exhausted and that they just needed to obey whatever he wanted for him not to get mad. Kris nodded and with his six years old brain he just thought he should follow what his mom was saying and everything would go back the way it used to be.
After few weeks though, the fighting and shouting didn’t stop. If he could say so, it even escalated to an everyday occurrence.
Kris was terrified when his dad started to throw mugs of coffee on the breakfast table because he got mad at something his mom had said. He started to sob at school whenever he remembered how his dad slapped his mom right in front of him. His little body was petrified at the blood he saw running down his mom’s chin.
Kris was so scared that day that he ran to the corner and sat with his knees tucked under his chin. He hugged his knees so tightly and closed his eyes forcefully. He was so, so, scared and started sobbing when he heard his mom saying ‘Pierre, please stop!’
His dad left the house after he was exhausted with shouting, breaking things and beating his mom. As soon as the door closed, his mom walked on her knees to reach him. Kris was still shivering in fear as his mom hugged him. Kris couldn’t let his eyes open and couldn’t stop crying. His mom caged him in her arms kissing his head and rocking him slightly.
‘’Shhh, it’s gonna be alright, baby. Everything’s gonna be alright, I promise.’’ She whispered.
Then after a while Kris calmed down and agreed to open his eyes and looked at his mom. He started to sob again as soon as he saw her bruised face, dried blood on her chin and a cut on her lip and on her right cheek.
‘’Kris, hey, stop crying, baby. I’m okay.’’ Kris seemed not to believed his mom because he just held her so tightly and said, ‘’Mom, are you going to die? Please don’t die?’’
‘’Oh, honey, I’m not going to die. I just need to clean up then get some rest. Tomorrow you’ll see, I’ll be fine.’’ She said convincingly but Kris still refused to let go of her.
They stayed in that position for at least an hour or so until Kris agreed to stand up but trailing behind his mom’s back.
That night Kris didn’t sleep the whole night. He didn’t want to close his eyes for fear his mom might die. He saw how his mom suffered from his dad’s beating that afternoon and he saw on TV that people could die from beatings and so he was afraid to close his eyes. He thought if he would take care of her and watch her sleep she might be okay in the morning.
He sat on the chair near the open window and stared at his mom for the longest time. He didn’t understand why his dad was angry all the time but what he did know was that he needed to just follow what he wanted. Maybe by doing that he would be happy for them and would stop hurting his mom.
He turned his head from her to look at the beautiful full moon in the dark sky. It was so breathtakingly beautiful and with his young mind Kris couldn’t understand the calmness it gave him. He found out whenever he’s lonely or scared looking at the moon would calm him. It made him forget a little bit about his fear.
That night was no exception. He looked up at the bright moon and just after few minutes a small smile formed on his lips.
That day seemed to make Kris withdraw from everyone-well except from his mom. He would always just sit with her and keep her company or hide inside his room as soon as his dad came home. He started to pull away from his friends at school and didn’t talk much. If he did it would be limited to a few words only. But if he could just communicate with nodding or shaking his head it seemed Kris would rather do just that.
His teachers got worried with his sudden changed of behavior and summoned his mother to the office. When she came out of the office she seemed to convince his teachers that he was fine. He didn’t know how she did that but after that day nobody gave him second glances like they were trying to dissect him or give him pity filled looks.
Then after that he just kind of managed to disappear from everyone’s attention. At eight Kris became much more shy and loner. He also didn’t want to do what the other young boys like his age wanted to do instead he was focused on how to be a good son to his parents for them not to fight anymore, for his dad not to be angry all the time.
He was doing everything his mom had taught him to but his dad seemed to not be satisfied with it. So Kris grew up to just patiently sit in the corner watching his dad shouting, pushing and beating his mom. And at the end of the day, Kris kept doing what he thought has made him feel good at least, sitting at his window and watching the moon rising up the dark sky. He didn’t know why but it somehow helped him forget everything. He was just mesmerized by it, by how beautiful it was and how it kind of spoke to him to just hold on. And that was what he exactly did.
The situation in their home continued to be miserable. Kris was taken out from school by his mom and she started to home schooled him at nine. He grew to be even further away from other people and closer to his mom. He was with her from the moment he woke up until he needed to go to bed at night.
With those times he saw his dad mistreating his mom, she always made sure each and every day that it was okay and that everything would be fine. She told him that it was what you do with people who you loved-to be patient. Just be patient and be good, if he did, his father would be pleased. She said this thing happening to their family was normal. Everyone in this world faces their own kind of battle. He should be thankful instead because his dad was still with them.
And so that was what Kris carried on his mind as he grew up. He followed whatever his dad told him to and his mom being patient and trying to be good for his dad. And he loved his dad Pierre, too, so he was determined to be like his mom. Be patient and good.
When he was eleven, his mama prepared a small party for the three of them humming happily as she served the food she prepared on the table. He asked her what’s the occasion and why she’s so happy but her mother just smiled and kissed his cheek and told him she would tell the happy news when his dad Pierre would arrive.
After few minutes they heard the door open and close and few moments later Pierre appeared in their kitchen’s doorway looking at his mother in confusion.
She walked to him and guided him to his chair but Pierre jerked his hand back asking her what the celebration was all about?
His mother tried to divert the discussion but Pierre was starting to get red and he was looking at her like he was going to burst into flame.
Then his mother told them the reason for the celebration, the reason why she was so happy.
She was pregnant.
Kris actually felt excited because at long last he would be having a little brother or sister. But the look on his papa Pierre’s face made him want to crawl under the table.
Then he started shouting in her face. Kris couldn’t really understand what they were arguing about because his body trembled in fear and he was crying even before he noticed that he was. He wanted to move but he was frozen in his seat.
His eyes grew bigger as he saw Pierre push his mother so hard that it made her stumble backward. Kris was so scared and the shouting was too loud. He covered his ears with his hands until he couldn’t see his mother and Pierre because his eyes were full of tears.
He couldn’t understand why he got so mad just because his mom was pregnant, he should be happy, right? From that day his parents were fighting from the time they opened their eyes in the morning until they would finally close them to sleep and it left him staring at the moon with a heavy heart.
Although his dad was shouting all the time he stopped beating his mom. That at least was progress in Kris’ mind. He was hoping after she gave birth he would stop fighting her all together and they would be a happy family at last. Because even though he thought what they have now is already normal living as his mother always told him, he couldn’t stop thinking about living a life without fighting, struggling and hurting.
That hope crushed down when his mom gave birth. His papa rushed her to the hospital when she bled unstoppably just after her 7th month of pregnancy. She was at the kitchen cooking while Kris was doing his homework at the dining table when he saw blood streaking down her legs.
Kris couldn’t forget the look on his mom’s face as she looked down at her legs. She called for his dad and he rushed her to the hospital.
Kris was left alone. He hadn’t been that scared in his life. The fear that he felt was similar to that first time he saw his mom being beaten by his dad. When he thought she was going to die from bleeding and bruises. That was almost 6 years ago but the memory was fresh as if it was yesterday.
His dad didn’t come home that night and Kris didn’t sleep even a blink. He just stayed at the window staring at the moon to find some comfort, some assurance and some calmness. And as expected, he fell asleep.
The next day, Kris waited but his dad didn’t show up at their house. Kris was becoming more worried about his mom. He tried to divert his attention and read some books but he couldn’t even bring himself to understand a word he was reading.
He must fell asleep while reading a book because when he woke up it was already dark outside. Kris sat and headed to peek out the window to see their driveway but there was still no trace of his father and for the first time in almost 24 hours he felt his stomach rumble.
He went to helped himself something to eat. He opened the refrigerator to find leftovers from last night’s dinner. He put it in microwave to heat up and then for him to eat.
He sat in the window after to wait for his father to come home and tell him that his mom and his baby sibling were fine but he was up until dawn when he finally fell asleep again but his dad didn’t show up.
The next day, Kris was too worried and scared to even think straight. He woke up after only couple hours of sleep when he had the most horrible dream. He dreamt he was in a field playing with his pregnant mom. They were running freely chasing a very beautiful butterfly when the sky just suddenly became dark and his surrounding seemed to change too. It looked like he was in a deserted village with everything around him were destroyed. He looked around and began to tremble when he noticed he was alone.
‘’Ma?’’ he called with shaky voice.
No one answered and Kris was so afraid that he begun to run around in searched for his mother.
‘’Ma?’’ he cried. ‘’Where are you?’’
But no one was there and the weather seemed to spike up like there was a storm coming. The thought of being alone in that place and losing his mom made him run faster and cried even harder until he stumbled because he couldn’t see the way anymore from tears and dust in the wind.
‘’Mama…’’ he sobbed when his small body hit the ground. He felt so tired, so scared, and so alone. It just seemed too much to bear and he just hugged his frail body on the ground and cried. ‘’Ma, please…’’ he cried silently, so resigned.
‘’Please… please come back to me…’’
He woke up with a not so gentle shake of his shoulder on the third day he was alone at the house. When he opened his eyes he saw his dad’s face frowning down at him. He sat abruptly and asked ‘’Where’s mom?’’
He noticed his dad clenched his jaws and stood straight fisting his hands. ‘’Dad?’’ he called.
He looked down at him with no life in his eyes, more so than it ever were. That sent shivers to his little body that he didn’t even understand why he felt like that. Why he felt so scared and so lost.
‘’Get dress and meet me at the car.’’ He said coldly walking to the master bedroom but told him to make it faster before slamming the door that caused the frames on the wall to almost fall down.
After 30 minutes, Kris found himself staring at his mother.
He was confused when he noticed they weren’t heading to the hospital where his mom supposed to be. That’s the place where pregnant moms delivered, right? He asked himself when his dad led him to a building which he failed to read as he was being roughly tugged by his dad.
But once they were inside and found very few people sitting scattered around the room, Kris could practically read the pity on each of their faces. He continued to walk looking in each of the guests faces until he noticed they stopped in front of something… or someone… who was his mother-lying in a casket.
Kris didn’t move. He couldn’t move even if he wanted to. He just didn’t know what to do, what to think or what to feel. This was just too much for his young mind to even conceive.
He just stared at her calm face. He noticed that was the calmest he ever saw her for the longest time and he didn’t know what to feel when it took only her life to end for her to look this calm and peaceful.
She even looked happy and that made him tear up.
She would be this calm and peaceful from now on. That thought actually made him smile a bit. He reached to touch her face but stopped himself before he could actually do it. Because at that exact time something had hit him that made his whole body shiver with fear-from sadness.
His knees wobbled and he sank down to kneel in front of the casket.
His mother was gone. She was gone from his life, from this world forever.
‘Oh my God...I just lost the only person who loved me unconditionally’ his mind screamed at him while he struggled to breathe.
Then he cried harder as everything around him just disappeared. Now he was truly alone in this world, without anyone to tell him it was okay, that everything was going to be fine.
‘’Ma, why did you leave me... Don’t leave me... Mama…’’ he sobbed with his knees still on the floor and eyes full of tears.
