[mind-the-muse] (december) the world is just a little bit colder today

Ten ways you say I'm sorry without speaking.

1. They work on the impala together; silent save for the clang of metal against metal and the occasional grunt of too much effort or curse from Sammy's lips because he just doesn't have a way with cars the way Dean does. Which of course, Dean knows. Dean knows because he's had to fix his baby just after Sammy "fixed" her. But it's bonding and he's the big brother and there's not going to be a lot of time for this kind of thing after a while. And for that, he is sorry; but he's not going to apologize so this is what he does. Let's Sam touch his car's girly parts.

2. He wraps (very ineptly he might add) an old collection of knives he found at this antique shop in Wyoming. He has each blade engraved with something that means something to him or her or both of them. Dates he remembers, things he's said and meant. He figures she might start tossing them at him for the thing with Bela but he's just hoping she'll take a closer look. He didn't do anything wrong; he knows that but she doesn't so he has to make up for it.

3. When the knives didn't work he had to keep thinking. He's been in love before but Cassie wasn't quite the same kinda girl that Jo; hunters are just like a different species and he now feels sorry for all the women he's been with. So they go to a bar one night because Jo may have thrown him out of her bed for now but she's still hunting with them. So it's a karaoke bar and he gets up on stage and belts out her favorite REO song and he can see her start to melt a little bit. It's a start.

4. He throws Sammy the keys and slips into the backseat, he lets Jo take the front and he closes his eyes as they both look at him. Yeah yeah, he'd been an ass and he's sorry just drive. He stays quiet.

5. He slips his jacket around her shoulders and wraps his arms around her. He doesn't know how to do this whole thing but he tries anyway and he screws up all the time. He wasn't built for it in the same way that he gets incredibly antsy if he's in the same place for too long. He's hers though and he tried to fight it but it's the right time now, the right place.

6. Sammy makes him so damn angry half the time and now he's got Jo on his side trying to find a way to get Dean out of his deal. The both of them drive him crazy. He appreciates it but if Sammy drops dead from all this dealing Dean's gonna bring him back again just so he can kill him. Of course before that happens he finds himself just sitting a beer down in front of his brother and leaning back in the chair, the leather jacket making a slight noise as he moves. He shrugs and takes a sip of his beer.

7. He lets her take point on the hunt. That's saying sorry enough isn't it?

8. He doesn't beat the shit out of Sam for getting all chummy with a demon. At least that's one type of chick Dean's never slept with.

9. They end up back in Kansas. Mom's grave meticulous. They bury a family picture and an old leather jacket of their dad's in the dirt above their mother's head-stone. It's an apology to both his parents. He didn't keep Sam safe and that is the thing he's most sorry for.

10. He looks at both of them and they are staring at him shocked at the words that just left his mouth. He rolls his eyes and sighs. He grabs Jo and pulls her outside. A vacation is in order? What?
