There is really little point to this post except to use the subject line. Which is already familiar to Tom Felton fans anyway- but this time,it's personal.
I just succeeded in scoring 2 large fowl and a huge carp for very cheap (and at walking distance!), and I am pleased. Other groceries are arrive via Fresh Direct later, a few things need to be picked up, and dad's bringing the matza and 4 bottles of ye olde Two Buck Chuck. (Don't worry- we'll squeeze a bottle of Manischewitz in somehow.)
I didn't want to make a roast for the seder because my oven is very small and sets off the smoke detector regularly, so I have chosen the more relaxed route of making lots of complicated dishes that can all be made in advance. And some people are bringing things.
What I am making, since you asked:
*Homemade gefilte fish (though I am still sorting out the meaning of the instructions about the heads in my aunt's recipe. I do have a large, freshly cleaned carp, so I feel I'm half way there.)
*Super strong clear chicken soup. I do this by boiling a large fowl for hours and hours one day, straining it, and then boiling another large fowl for hours and hours in the stock, and strain and skim again. Flavor with carrots and parsley. And salt of course.
*My sister is bringing the matza balls. Allah be praised.
*2 kinds of charoset (a traditional, indeed ritual, relish that is part of the passover meal). One is as close as I think I can get to the typical Ashkenazi sort, with apples, walnuts, and wine. The other is a many-ingrediented Persian type with pistaschios and almonds and dates and orange etc etc- it is supposed to contain pomegranate seeds, which was part of the attraction, but pomegranates seem to have gone out of season. Must try Whole Foods.
*A Sephardic dish of braised lamb shoulder with apricots. I'll serve with boiled new potatoes, and Cubby will bring an asparagus dish for sides.
*Another pal will bring a delicious, matza meal-free dessert. And bob's your uncle. Or, in my case, Hananya.
