Irony

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency is an old news service, sort of like AP only smaller and more Jewish. For reasons related to my job, I was given a sample of their bulletins from 1945, about both Europe and Palestine. I found this in the latter:

"Responsible Jewish circles... ridiculed the official communique describing the incident [British troops firing on Jewish protesters in Kfar Giladi], which charged that several Jews armed with sticks attacked the soldiers, causing them to fire. The Jewish leaders said that it was difficult to believe that men armed only with sticks would attack an armed detachment of troops."

See, they hadn't yet thought of picking up rocks- that's a post-67 innovation.

ETA: Happy World Rat Day! Many, many thanks to Isis for pointing this out to me.
