Chapter Five
After his second day at school, Taemin saw that maybe moving to Fremont wasn’t so bad at all. Maybe moving to Fremont would actually benefit him. He has never had as much friends as he had in his new school. Maybe living in a small, tight-knit community was the perfect solution to Taemin’s social issues. The whole thing was therapeutic to him.
Jonghyun wasn’t hating this new life as much as he previously expected to, neither. He really wanted to get to know Onew more and he had to admit that he was a bit curious about Key, too. There was just something about the outgoing blond that sparked Jonghyun’s interest. He was so…unique. Jonghyun had no idea how to describe it, because he’s never seen it. He was Key Kim. The most interesting guy on earth-or at least he was to most of the people in the suburb.
Jonghyun told Taemin about Key’s invite to eat sushi, and Taemin just nodded with a ‘sure’. Taemin had other things on his mind. He met up with most if not all of Jay’s dance group people during lunch that day and he was excited for the following day to arrive so that he can hang out with his new friends; especially when the hangout involved his passion (that didn’t have anything to do with academics), dancing.
“Jonghyun…Will you stay with me after school tomorrow?” Taemin asked, later that night before bed. They were in Jonghyun’s room, per usual.
“For…? Oh wait, that dancing thing huh? Well, sure, I don’t see why not,” Jonghyun smiled.
“Thanks, hyung,”
“No problem, Taeminnie,”
“You want to help me with this math problem?”
“Not really,” Jonghyun answered honestly, watching Taemin struggle with the homework that he’s been working on since they got home that day.
“Algebra II is really hard,” Taemin frowned, even though his homework was only a knowledge review that was testing how much he knows about Algebra. Jonghyun was just happy to finally be away from the wretched math subject, in no way was he going back just to help his cousin for a paper that wasn’t even going to be graded. Taemin got a headache and finally went to his own room moments later.
*****
Wednesdays were always boring, but this day went particularly slower; especially because Taemin was as jittery and excited as ever. He just wanted the day to end, but time seemed to be mocking him. Jonghyun laughed at Taemin’s lack of patience at lunch that day. When the final bell finally rang, Taemin jumped out of his seat and all but ran to the school’s foyer. He smiled finding that Jay and Minji was already there. He thought that he already knew everybody in the group, but then he realized that he was wrong when he was introduced to a handful of new people. One of the new people was named Krystal Jung. She was a ballet dancer who wanted to expand her dancing ability. Another was Chaerin Lee. She did hip-hop and was interested in krumping. And finally, there was Wooyoung Jang. He was a flexible guy who seemed to be able to dance in any way he wanted to. Taemin instantly loved them. He found Krystal adorable, and he adored her chill personality. He absolutely loved Chaerin’s fierceness and Wooyoung’s cute and funny actions. Taemin was happy that all of these people were so easy-going and easy to get along with, but since they were all new to him, he couldn’t help but feel nervous around them. He was never good with meeting new people anyways, but the kindness of the group made the introductions so much easier.
“Alright, Min, show us your best moves!” Jay exclaimed, putting on the song, “Beautiful Monster” by Ne-Yo.
“Right now? Uh, I don’t know, I haven’t really been dancing in a long time…”
“Come on, Minnie! I’m sure you’ll do well!” Minji encouraged, getting up to join him. Minji and Jay were dancing on their own, pushing Taemin dance too. Although he was conscious about many things, Taemin was always confident in dancing, mostly because he loved it so much. Taemin felt the rhythm and started moving with the beat. He began popping and locking (his specialty) and Minji and Jay clapped. His movements fit perfectly with the music.
“Oh my gosh Min! What were you talking about that other day when you said you weren’t good? You’re amazing!” Minji complimented. The other kids clapped and complimented Taemin while he turned red and nodded shyly.
“No doubt, you’ll do really well in this group,” Wooyoung smiled, patting Taemin’s back.
“Thanks,” He muttered shyly.
“Alright, so should we start talking about our routine?” Jay asked everybody.
“Routine?” Taemin asked, not really knowing what was going on.
“Our school has two talent shows a year; one that’s strictly for singing and another that’s just an average talent show. We’re joining the average one obviously, and even though it won’t happen until the end of the year, we like to prepare early, maybe make a few routines to choose from,” Jay explained. Chaerin handed Jay a CD, and mixed dance music began playing, “Chaerin mixes our songs,” Jay explained with a smile, “Okay, let’s do it! Taemin, do you want to teach us some moves? You seem really good,”
“Okay…” Taemin listened intently to the song that was playing. It was a song he was familiar with called ‘Let it Go’ by Brit and Alex. Being familiar with the song, Taemin found it easy to get into the rhythm. His dance, this time, was a lot more aggressive, and contained much more movement. The group watched him wide eyed. Fourty seconds later, when the song started fading into a new one, Taemin stopped. The group was awed. Suddenly, loud clapping came from one of the hallways. Key walked in, with Minho and two more of his friends behind him.
“WOAH! Min! You just came up with that on your own?! I didn’t think you’d be so good!” Key exclaimed. Taemin couldn’t help but become flattered, being complimented by Key Kim.
“Ew, why are you here?” Chaerin scowled at Key.
“I wasn’t even talking to you, Chaerinnie,” Key scoffed, walking up to Taemin. Along the way, he tried to poke Chaein’s face but she slapped his hand away.
“Get the hell away from me, asshole,” She fumed. Key laughed at her. Taemin found himself confused. He wondered what the issue was between the two. Key approached Taemin and introduced his friends. Taemin already knew Minho. The two others were named Jinwoon and DongWoon.
“You like to dance? I used to dance too, but I stopped recently, because I was busy,” Key smiled.
“Really?” Taemin found the fact that Key dances kind of amazing. The song ‘Dirty Pop’ by N’sync started playing.
“Oh, I know this one!” Key exclaimed, beginning to show off his own moves. Taemin grinned in amazement, watching Key’s movements. He was really good, someone that Taemin could see his naïve-self looking up to. Taemin clapped once Key finished.
“You’re really good!” Taemin shouted in excitement. If Taemin thought that Key was cool before, he thought that Key was even cooler now.
“Oh stop it,” Key smiled, smugly, “Oh! I have to go help out with recycling right now, bye Minnie. I’ll see you and Jjong tomorrow!” Key hurried out of the foyer, his friends following behind.
“Bye Min,” Minho smiled, passing by Taemin. Taemin’s eyes widened.
“Oh, uh, bye,” Once the group was gone, Taemin sensed awkward tension in the air. He didn’t realize that everyone was silent throughout the time that Key and his friends were there, “Uh…so should we start with the routine?”
“You’re friends with them?” Wooyoung asked in a soft voice that was heavy in curiosity.
“Yes?”
“Never mind that,” Jay laughed, “Okay let’s start this!” Everyone diverted their attention from Taemin and they all worked together to piece together the opening choreography of the first mix. Jonghyun finally arrived a few minutes later. He decided just to sit down on one of the foyer’s benches, where Taemin’s items were, to watch the group dance. Jonghyun was never much of a dancer himself. He was okay with the technical stuff, but he could never imagine himself creating his own choreography. Once the dance practice ended, it was already 5:30pm. Everyone was sweaty and yet pumped, since Taemin’s moves really helped the group’s progress. Taemin had more fun during this dance session than he could ever remember having at all.
“Good job, man!” Jay smiled. Everyone patted Taemin’s back again and Taemin sat down on the bench beside Jonghyun.
“What a beast, Taeminnie,” Jonghyun pinched his cheek. Chaerin sat beside Taemin, since her items were there.
“Good Job, Minnie. You really helped a lot,” Chaerin congratulated.
“Thanks, Chaerin,”
“Hey, hey, hey. Don’t be rude; Call me, ‘Chaerin Nuna’” She scolded.
“Okay, Chaerin Nuna,” Taemin laughed, “Hey what was up with you and Key earlier, by the ways?” he asked, putting on his jacket.
“Oh, him? I kind of despise him,” Chaerin admitted.
“Why?”
“Oh, asking me what I do like about him would be so much easier, but that list would be so short I’d technically not even have anything to say. It’s a long story,”
“I’m listening,” Taemin urged with a small smile.
“Well first of all, he’s annoying. Everyone thinks he’s all that, but he’s such a douche bag. He and his clique are a group of the most stupid human beings ever, but everyone thinks that they’re so perfect. Kim Key is a fucking heart breaker too. Do you know that Krystal even fell for him? And since she’s so pretty, Key asked her out even though she’s a year younger than him-he never dated younger girls before. They dated for a while, but then Key dumped her, saying things like that she’s too good for him or some weird bullshit, but then he started dating her older sister (who is now a senior) like three days after. Damn, the poor girl was hella depressed. Krystal’s sister still hangs out with him, but they’re not dating anymore. He did the same thing with my best friend, Bomi. She dated him and he broke up with her, but then she decided to keep being his friend. She always told me that he was a giant douche, but he somehow convinced her to join his little clique and she hasn’t talked to me ever since. She’s become one of them, and because of her, Key tried to get me to join his stupid group, but I refused. Kim Key ruins lives. He nearly traumatized poor Krystal. She was too smart to join his clique afterwards, but she’s convinced that she loves him,”
“Key? Key did that? That sounds nothing like him,” Jonghyun butted in, eyebrows furrowing.
“Yeah, well, there’s a lot more to that guy than what you think. I dislike him so much,” Chaerin groaned. Taemin laughed at how worked up she got and patted her back.
“There, there, nuna,” Taemin tried.
“I’m just saying. I’m warning you guys right now, Kim Key is not good for you,”
“Well, I don’t really know him so I can’t really judge,” Jonghyun shrugged stiffly, getting up, “Taemin, let’s go now?” He felt weird around Chaerin and listening to her story. Jonghyun just didn’t want to believe it. He didn’t want to not like Key or even Onew, who’s in Key’s clique. They helped him out so much; he just couldn’t bring himself to dislike them, just because of this girl’s story. Taemin said goodbye to everyone and followed behind Jonghyun. They decided to walk home, because everything in the suburb was a walking distance anyways, and while they did so, Taemin began thinking deeply about Chaerin’s story.
“Do you think that Chaerin’s story is true?” Taemin asked.
“In some way, probably, but Key probably has his own side to the story,”
“So you don’t think that Key’s a bad person?”
“Why would I? He dated girls that chose to stay his friend. He had nothing to do with the decisions they made, some girls just like to blow stories up and start drama,”
“Mm, that’s why I’m gay,” Taemin joked.
“And this is why I’m not against it at all,” Jonghyun replied. Taemin chuckled. The rest of the walk was comfortable and was full of stories about their days.
