Chapter 2a: Jonghyun
A/N: OHH and I really don’t mean to stereotype Asian americans or small town kids. It’s just a story x) I made them Asian Americans because I don’t know how Korean school systems go xD I know nothing about the Korean lifestyle at all, so I thought it’d be easier to make the setting somewhere more familiar; a small town in the U.S. I picked Fremont because they have a high Asian/Korean population and since most of the characters in this are kpop artists, I just thought it’d make sense that way. :p I don’t mean to offend anybody. I hope you enjoy this chapter!
-------------------------------------
And the dreaded day finally arrives. I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror out of nervousness. It was my first day as a junior today. It was also my first day as a student of some High School in Fremont, CA.
“Are you ready, hyung?” Taemin asked, looking through the wide-open bathroom door. I had a habit of frequently leaving doors open.
“Yes, indeed. I’m so totally stoked to start learning, while being surrounded by probably-freaky strangers,” I said in dark sarcasm. Taemin smiled encouragingly and we both walked down stairs together. My dad was already at work, and my mom was watching television in the living room. Being a teacher, she still has to apply to the schools in town.
“Good luck you guys,” She smiled as Taemin and I passed by her. We both gave her a kiss on the cheek while saying our goodbyes; and in return she smiled and waved at us. Taemin and I exited the house and proceeded with our short walk to the bus stop. We both decided to wear similar outfits, just for the heck of it. I wore a red, plaid and un-buttoned flannel shirt over a white t-shirt and dark blue skinnies. Taemin wore almost the same thing; except his plaid flannel was green and he wore khaki skinnies.
“I don’t think our clothes would lead anyone to think we’re cool,” Taemin admitted, darting his eyes back and forth between our subtly matching outfits.
“I’m sure nobody would care,” I shrugged. It was cute, in my opinion.
As we walked out of the bus and started towards our new educational institution, we passed by group of stoners-which I knew we would find in this small town school sooner or later-smoking and getting their fill right in front of the school building. This definitely said a lot about the school itself.
Once we entered the building we found ourselves surprised at the students walking around.
“What the…is it just me or is there a lot of Asians in this school?” Taemin mumbled, as soon as we walked in. We were sure that Asians took up more than 50% of the school’s population.
“This is kind of freaky,” I agreed. I was definitely not used to this; since our old school’s Asian community was like 3%. I guess there’s always a time for new experiences. We checked our schedules and parted ways to get to our first classes-not that we’ll be that far away from each other anyways since the sophomore (Taemin’s) hallway and the junior (my) hallway were relatively close to each other.
I breathed in nervously as I stepped in to my first period, Pre-Calc, classroom. I kind of expected students to be in class early to study or something like that, but the room was empty. Even the teacher wasn’t in. Although I felt like a loser doing so, I sat down at one of the front tables to wait for class to start, whipping out my iPod (the beautiful original model-it was my pride and joy) to ease my boredom. Five minutes passed and students began finally to walk in, and they were far from what I had expected. There were no jolly, preppy kids in that classroom. They almost all wore dark and slightly depressing clothing; dark hoodies or wind breakers over dark skinnies for everybody, but I’d have to admit that it looked good on them. I was also amused and unsurprised to find the room filled with Asian kids. Nobody sat with me, but I didn’t really care at all, so I placed my binder on the space beside me to give myself more room to take notes. Or doodle, whichever comes first. The teacher called attendance and I introduced myself as “Jjong”, since it’s easier to pronounce. The teacher then announced that we would be going in to the auditorium for a “welcoming assembly,” The students of the class just walked to the auditorium on their own, and it seemed like the students ran this place. In contrast to what I had originally expected, instead of being preppy pricks, the students seemed a lot more out of control and slightly aggressive. The entire walk was chaotic (not that I was complaining); students yelling and pushing the whole time they were in the hallways. Beautiful chaos was always something that I had admired, anyways.
I finally arrived at the auditorium, and I awkwardly looked around for Taemin or some empty seats. Failing at finding Taemin, I ended up having to sit next to a group of rather playful teenagers, who kept pushing each other, often pushing me too. I was just lucky that I got an aisle seat, and was not stuck in a seat between them.
Once everyone was settled, a guy who I assumed to be the principal quieted everyone and introduced the student council, who took over the rest of the welcoming meeting. They were all beautiful, which lead me to think that they all probably got their offices through popularity contests. A tall guy with a baby face, long hair, formal clothes and a bright smile walked up to the podium.
“Hello students of 2011-2012, I am Onew Lee, and I am the head of public relations,” He announced, the room was filled with cheers. Yes, this was definitely the result of a popularity contest. He introduced the officers one by one, and nobody seemed to care until this Onew guy introduced the last one.
“And finally, here is our high school’s very first Junior student body president, Key Kim!” The room was filled with loud cheers again as a pretty-boy Asian kid with blond hair and nice clothing got up and walked to the stand. I remembered Justin Beiber for a second and accidently let out a chuckle. I played it off as a cough since the students around me probably wouldn’t appreciate me laughing at their precious president.
“I LOVE YOU KEY,” The guy beside me yelled, followed by a few other students all around the auditorium. The student president smiled at the audience and sent a cocky miss-universe wave to everyone who apparently ‘loves’ him. I smirked; this guy was so full of it. I had to admit that the president was kind of gorgeous. Especially with that dimpled smile of his.
“Thank you, thank you very much. So, are you all ready for the school year?” He asked with a voice that was deeper than I had expected. He had a slight accent; New York maybe? The crowd jeered.
“Oh come on, let’s hear it for our seniors, class of 2012!” Key yelled, getting the crowd hyped again.
“Now for the juniors, class of 2013!” Everyone continued cheering.
“And now our sophomores, class of 2014” The clapping continued but the noise lowered a bit. The sophomores didn’t seem to support themselves.
“And finally, the Freshmen, class of 2015” Complete silence. I ‘coughed’ again. What an interesting school.
“Yayy freshmen,” The president cheered in fake enthusiasm, “Anyways, I just want to thank everyone again for voting for as your president, even though I’m still in my Junior year, I love you guys,” Everyone cheered again, “I hope you guys have fun on your first day. If you need help getting around the school, just ask any of the student council members standing up here, and also your class officers…” Key announced all of the officers, but I had already tuned out at that point. The assembly ended shortly and everyone retreated to their first period class.
When we all arrived into our class, my teacher permitted us to do whatever we wanted, since there were only a few minutes left in class. Mr. Ryehall was his name, and he was one of those cheesy teachers who tried to be ‘cool’ with their students. After a few minutes the baby-faced kid with a bright smile walked in to the class and nodded at the teacher.
“Onew, my favorite student,” Mr. Ryehill greeted him. It was really surprising how this teacher seemed to know everybody.
“Hey Mr.Rye,” Onew politely greeted, he looked around at everyone who were greeting him and walked to my table.
“Hey, can I sit here?” He asked, stopping at the seat beside me.
“Oh…um, sure,” I replied, moving my stuff off of the previously un-occupied side of the desk.
“Thanks, man,” Onew smiled, sitting down, and immediately turning around to talk with his friends; and by friends I mean, pretty much the whole class. After their conversation died down, our 'head of public relations' turned to me.
“Hello, I’m Onew, but you probably knew that from the assembly,” He greeted.
“Oh, yeah. Hey, I’m Jonghyun, or err, call me Jjong” I replied, “Nice to meet you, sir” Onew laughed.
“Sir? You’re the new kid right?”
“Ah, you can tell? Well yeah, I am,” I admitted.
“Yep, I can smell new kids from a mile away. Where are you from?”
“Las Vegas,”
“That’s cool, are you a senior?”
“No, junior actually,”
“WOW, over-achiever,” He muttered. I was one math level ahead of most juniors.
“You’re a senior?” I asked.
“Uh..yeah,” He laughed awkwardly, “Everyone assumes that I'm a lot younger for some reason. Why’d you move here?”
“My dad is the new head doctor or whatever at your hospital,”
“That’s pretty cool… but, you don’t sound very happy,” Onew said, brows knitting.
“I’m happy for him...”
“But you’re not happy about moving?”
“Exactly,” I smiled.
“Well who would be? We’re two hours away from civilization,”
“That’s…actually not very far,”
“Oh, God. City folk like you,” Onew shook his head. I smiled. Onew introduced me to his friends, and they were all pretty nice and welcoming, once you get passed that rowdy exterior. The horrible things that I expected haven’t occurred yet, maybe school will go by better and faster than I thought it would.

A/N: When I said that this is my first fanfic, I meant on livejournal. I was previously a writer on Winglin :o
I probably don’t even deserve to be posting here, you all seem so sophisticated and experienced. Sigh. But I’ve been writing up tons and tons of fanfics(guilty; they’re most if not all Jongkey) and I have them all cluttering my laptop’s memory. Since winglin has died (D: let’s revive it!) and I never really got in to asianfanfics, I thought why not try this. Poooop.
Plus, I had this account for so long, just reading other peoples’ fanfics, I finally decided that I should do something about it. :p
Thanks for reaaading! Chapter 2b will be posted tomorrow. :D
