Chapter 4: Passions and Invitations

Jonghyun woke up at 5:30pm after dozing off out of nowhere. What was he doing before he fell asleep again? He himself couldn’t even remember. As his eyes opened, the first thing he saw was the sun setting through his large windows. He smiled, feeling lucky that he woke up just in time to view such a sight. He turned to his front and saw his own laptop on top of his stomach, a position which could not have been healthy. He took the overheating electronic device off of his body and finally turned to the right, finding Taemin all bathed and in his PJs, sitting at his desk, staring at him. Jonghyun jumped a little, not expecting Taemin to be there at all.

“What the hell, what are you doing?”

“I was watching you sleep,” Taemin said with big eyes.

“That’s fucking creepy as hell, do you know that?” Taemin started laughing.

“I was kidding, but there really isn’t much else to do. I was actually doodling,”

“Oh, well, I’m going to shower, I’m starting to smell myself,” Jonghyun said, mostly to himself, as he made his way to the bathroom. Taemin went back to his doodling and all was well in the Kim household.

Jonghyun and Taemin decided that it would be fun to play some chess before dinner, and so they did. Oh, the exciting lives they lived, but dinner finally came around, ruining their fun game. Everyone gathered together in the dining-room. Jonghyun’s father got home just in time to help set up the tables.

“So, how was school?” Jonghyun’s mom asked after having a short conversation about work with her husband.

“It was wonderful, I already had like two homework assignments, auntie,” Taemin said, voice dripping with sarcasm. Mrs. Kim laughed at how cute he was.

“Have you guys made friends?” Mr. Kim asked.

“Yeah, the kids are surprisingly scary, but they’re not mean or anything. Even Taemin here has already found his little group of dancer children,” Jonghyun told them.

“Yeah, and Jonghyun has his band geeks,” Taemin snickered while Jonghyun’s smile melted into a jokingly offended frown.

“What about clubs or sports? Does the school offer a lot?” Mrs. Kim asked.

“I guess, but I don’t think I’m comfortable in re-joining the clubs that I used to be in yet…I would kind of feel like I’m stabbing my clubs in Las Vegas in the back. And sports…err, the athletes here are a bit intimidating,” Taemin admitted.

“I agree, I wanted to get in on football or basketball, but the kids look pretty…scary. They’re all kind of…perfect-looking. I just don’t think I’ll fit in with them,” Jonghyun added.

“Oh, so they have that ‘Mr. Jock is Mr. Popular’ stereotype?”

“Surprisingly, no. I thought every school in the world had those kids that fulfilled the stereotype, but here it isn’t like that. It’s not like they’re popular, they just look…they look like they eat kids like Taemin for breakfast. Like, they’re tall, unbelievably gorgeous, reserved and they all have that ‘I don’t care’ look to them,”

“Oh…kay? I guess I get it,” Mrs. Kim tried understanding. Jonghyun nodded.

“Yup. Oh, dad! I’m joining HOSA here!” Jonghyun mentioned. It was a club for kids who were planning on being in the medical field in the future.

“Really? That’s my boy, you really want to follow your old man’s footsteps don’t you?”

“Yes sir! Well, kind of. It’s just something to fall back on if I don’t become a famous musician, which I will be,” The boy joked.

“Oh Jonghyun,” Mr. Kim shook his head. His kid was always so indecisive, “I remember when you were little and you said you wanted to be me when you grow up,” Mr. Kim chuckled. Jonghyun remembered that. He thought back to that memory, “’what do you want to be when you grow up, Jonghyun?’ ‘I want to be my dad! My dad is the best, he saves peoples’ lives! He’s a super hero, I think! And he makes a lot of money to buy me toys. I want to do that for my kids too!” It was like it was just yesterday that Jonghyun was a second grader with big dreams to save lives and be a famous super hero. His goal hasn’t changed but…you can say the subject within his goal has changed. He wanted to be a hero through medicine back then, and now he wants to be a hero through music, but either one would be a huge accomplishment. His parents supported him through anything, even buying him the things he needed for his aspirations before he was able to get a job. Things like instruments, books on music and things like that. Jonghyun wasn’t doing the doctor thing just to please his father at all; he was genuinely interested in the idea of having ‘saving lives’ as his career. He always switched between the two professions of musician and being a doctor at times when he thinks of his future, but he figures that since being a doctor was more practical, he should strive for it more during his high school years, at least, just like he had said, he’d have it to fall back on when he went for his real dreams of music.

“Oh, Jonghyun! Speaking of being a doctor, we have open internship at the hospital here, and almost nobody volunteers. If you want to observe or do little things to help around, you can go with me,”

“Really?” Jonghyun asked, “Well yeah, if your co-workers trust me with anything, heck yes! I always wanted to play nurse in a real hospital,”

“Jonghyun, this is not a game-”

“I know, I know, I was joking, but yeah I’d really like to. The hospital back at home would never let me do this! It’s a great opportunity. When?”

“You can start this Friday. Be my assistant, I’ll really need some help because some of the nurses are going on vacation,”

“Alright! I am ready,” Jonghyun claimed.

“You better be,” Mr. Kim grunted, slightly unsure about his own son.

“I am, I promise, just trust me,”

“I know, I know…”

Dinner continued just like that; Jonghyun and his father conversing about hospitals, Mrs. Kim and Taemin talking about the school, and just like the day never happened, it was night again. Taemin and Jonghyun washed the dishes as they will now be doing every night.

“So, we’re not going to party with Key and them?” Taemin asked casually, while he scrubbed a plate with a soapy sponge.

“Oh yeah, I completely forgot…well yeah, I probably won’t party this Friday since I’m not sure if I want to pass up the opportunity to actually work inside of a hospital…kind of. You go ahead though if you want, they seem like they’d take care of you well,”

“Nah, it’s no big deal, I’m still a little intimidated by them,” Taemin confessed, “Maybe next time. Plus, I don’t think I’ll survive in a party all alone.”

“You’ll have Onew and Key,”

“I barely even had a conversation with them, though,”

“Oh yeah…Oh well, let’s try to go next time then,” Jonghyun smiled, rinsing of the soapy utensils handed to him by Taemin.

*****

Morning seemed to have arrived way too quickly to both Taemin who slept right after doing the dishes, and Jonghyun who stayed up until 2am doing absolutely nothing. Just like the day before, they did their ordinary morning routines (excluding Jonghyun’s nervous staring at the mirror and Jonghyun’s mother watching early morning soaps). Jonghyun’s mother was in the kitchen dressed professional attire, enjoying some pancakes that she had made. Jonghyun and Taemin walked into the kitchen, seduced by the sweet scent of the sweet of the breakfast food.

“Good morning sunshines,” she greeted. Jonghyun said something but his yawn took away all the meaning of his words and Taemin smiled and bowed, “Have some blueberry pancakes, I actually made it myself!”

“Thanks mom,” Jonghyun said tiredly, dragging his body to the coffee machine to grab himself a cup of energy. He was unashamed to admit that he was addicted to the stuff, and was intoxicated by just the scent of it. Three sips were all that he needed to feel energized, but he finished his cup anyways as he ate pancakes with Taemin. Jonghyun’s mother left first, since she had a few interviews in some of the town’s elementary schools, and the town’s one and only junior high school. Jonghyun and Taemin followed soon enough after once again washing the dishes.

The two boys remained beside each other until they had to enter separate hallways.

“See you at lunch, Min,”

“Yeah, seeya Jjong,”

They waved at each other and finally descended into their first period classrooms.

Taemin sat down quietly. There were already a few students in class, and they were looking at him. He sat down and heard them whispering, and suddenly, a skinny boy walked up to him.

“Hello, may I sit next to you?” The boy greeted.

“Sure,” Taemin said, trying not to sound too curious.

“My name is Benjamin. I’m Jay and Minji’s friend. I dance with them and I heard that you will soon, too,” He greeted kindly.

“Oh, yeah. Hi, I’m Taemin, but you can call me Min,”

“Nice to meet you! Sorry we didn’t welcome you well yesterday; we’re all just a tad bit anti-social,”

“Oh,” Taemin laughed, “It’s fine, I’m glad you guys talked to me at all, I was scared I had to be a loner here. I hate being a loner in hard classes.”

“Oh don’t worry, this class isn’t hard, our teacher just gives us too much work,”

“Either way, it’s the same to me,” Taemin sighed. Benjamin agreed and then introduced Taemin to the rest of the kids in the class.

Meanwhile, Jonghyun walked into a class full of greetings. All of the students already knew him, and Jonghyun felt that it was probably just because he was seen hitting it off with the popular Onew and Key. It was a little sad for him to think that this was probably the only reason people wanted to be his friend at the moment, but Jonghyun just shrugged that thought off. Onew arrived only fifteen seconds before the bell.

“Hello, Jonghyun,” Onew immediately greeted with a smile.

“Hello, Onew,” Jonghyun replied, trying to match the older boy’s cheerfulness.

“How was your first day?”

“It was a lot better than I expected,” Jonghyun said honestly.

“That’s good!”

“Yup, you small town people are actually interesting to be around,”

“That’s offensive,” Onew laughed.

“It was a compliment!” Jonghyun defended, also laughing. The teacher then quieted everyone down and started class. Onew and Jonghyun worked together throughout the class period and Jonghyun saw that Onew wasn’t just a nice guy who was welcoming the new kid; he was actually a person that Jonghyun could see himself being good friends with. They both had a strong interest in music, even though Onew liked classical music which Jonghyun could never get in to. Both boys also learned that they both loved to sing, and made plans to sing together someday. Jonghyun admired the fact that Onew seemed so passionate when talking about both music and singing. Although Jonghyun wanted music to be his career oh so badly, he couldn’t deny that Onew probably deserves to be a musician more than he himself did since he never even took music as a serious consideration, as if it were just an impossible dream. He hoped that Onew would help him work harder for his own dreams, but once again, with all the existing musicians and all those who claim to be musicians on this planet, Jonghyun thought that he might as well not waste his time. Too much competition. Once again, Jonghyun is an indecisive young man.

Jonghyun could already sense a routine forming as the rest of the day continued, since everything he did was suddenly familiar due to how the events of the day were so similar to the events of the previous day. He also saw how the people of Onew and Key’s clique pretty much dominated the school. Jonghyun saw them prancing around in the hallways, being close to and well-liked by the teachers while being admired by the students. They weren’t the cliché ‘popular-but-arrogant’ students; they actually worked hard to be liked. Jonghyun saw Key and Onew wishing almost all the students a happy year, and encouraging them to ask for help if they needed it. Jonghyun also saw Minho doing his best to help his fellow underclassmen out by showing them around the school and pointing out where they needed to go when they were lost. They appeared to be the perfect kids that every adult wished they’d have as children. Key, especially, seemed to have the school in the palm of his hands, making him even more intimidating than he was the first time that Jonghyun had seen him in that assembly.

The day passed by quickly, and Jonghyun was suddenly in his fourth period class. As he walked in, he noticed a familiar blond boy waving at him with a grin; Jonghyun realized that the boy was beckoning him over and so he obediently went over to the back of the room, where the blond was seated.

“Hello, Key,” Jonghyun greeted, “I didn’t even know I had this class with you,”

“Hello Jonghyun. I know, I don’t think you saw me yesterday since you sat all the way at the front,” Key said, raising an eyebrow and softly smirking in amusement.

“What’s with that look you are giving me?”

“It’s just that…well, who sits at the front on purpose?”

“People like me who like to learn?” Jonghyun tried to answer. Key’s face became serious.

“…Nerd,” Key said jokingly.

“Wow, so you just call me over to insult me like that,” Jonghyun said, faking being offended.

“No, I was just going to offer you the seat beside me. I don’t really have friends in this class, that’s why. But you seem like a good front-of-the-class-student so…” Jonghyun rolled his eyes at Key’s words and sat beside him. Key smiled.

“How do you see anything from back here?”

“Uh…do you usually wear glasses or something?”

“No, but we’re so far away from the board. Wouldn’t it be hard to see?”

“Have you ever sat at the back of a classroom before?”

“Of course I have!”

“In your own free will and for more than two weeks?” Jonghyun kept quiet at this question, resulting in Key’s loud, nearly obnoxious, but incredibly precious laugh.

“Don’t judge me,” Jonghyun frowned.

“I’m sorry. It’s cute, really,” Key teased.

“And I thought you were nice…”

“I am, so yeah what about this Friday? Have you and Min thought about it?”

“Ah, yeah. I can’t go, I have plans with my dad, and Taemin doesn’t want to go without me,”

“Oh, I understand. What about the day before that, are you guys free? Because you guys should really go out to eat with us on Thursday right after school. My friends and I are going to eat some sushi at Semo Sushi,” Key was persistent. He was going to get to know the new kids.

“I’ve never heard of that place. But then again, I just moved here so…”

“Aish,”

“HAHA that’s so Korean,” Jonghyun laughed.

“Do you think you two can come? Eh? Ehhh???” Key asked, while poking Jonghyun’s side. Jonghyun twitched, being ticklish and all. Jonghyun slapped Key’s hand away which caused more obnoxious loud laughter and stares from the rest of their classmates who were beginning to arrive.

“Yeah I guess, Thursdays are my nothing days. I don’t know about Taemin though,”

“Ok. I’ll take that as a ‘yes’ then. Don’t bother bringing money, it’s our treat,” Key smiled. Jonghyun smiled back, although he tried not to, and averted his attention from Key to the actual lesson being taught in class.

Jonghyun was half surprised to find Taemin walking out of the school with a group of his peers later that day, but he was happy to see his cousin smiling and talking to people. Occasions like this were rare. His three friends in Las Vegas made Taemin look like a loser, but his dancer friends at this school actually made him look…well, like he had friends. Taemin excused himself from the group and walked over to where Jonghyun waited for him. When Taemin reached Jonghyun, the older messed up his hair and smiled proudly.

“Dang, Taemin, I didn’t know that you were so charismatic, I’m so proud of you!” Jonghyun could hardly contain himself, as he wrapped his arm around Taemin’s shoulders and walked him to the bus stop.

“Thanks,” Taemin grinned.  Taemin was always so calm and never really ever showed much emotion. Seeing Taemin genuinely happy made Jonghyun himself happy.
