McCoy Tyner

We went to McCoy Tyner tonight and I must say I was disappointed. Not in the music, but the man. The trio was excellent and Tyner was everything he had been built up to be. Everyone in the theatre was completely into it. But after being on stage for an hour, he stood up from the piano and said something to the effect of, "I am sorry, but this is the worst piano I have ever played on. I am not trying to complain but this is crap. Thank you all for coming out tonight."

He then proceeded to walk off the stage, leaving two groups very confused; his audience of over 400 in the Broadway Theatre and his band. They didn't know if the show was over or what was going on. The bassist, who was absolutely amazing, just sort of stood there for 30 seconds. The crowd rose to its feet, applauding what little of a performance it got, which must have convinced him to come back out. He played one more song and was gone off the stage before the last cord had finished resonating through the building.

In the end, the entire performance was one hour. The ticket was $40.00 in advance, $45.00 at the door. Fortunately, mine were free from the festival but I felt pretty damn bad for everybody else there. At least if there had been an opening band the show might have lasted a couple of hours. All in all it was one of the saddest displays by a world-renowned musician I have seen. I should point out I do not have much to reference in the "world-renowned musician tantrum" department.

I can definitely say that it is obivious he is a very talented musician. He just has alot of growing up to do for a 70 year-old man. Dave Holland was a far better show and I expect the same from Little Richard tomorrow.
