I must say that Little Richard puts on a damn good show for a 73 year old man. Hell, he puts on a good show for a 23 year old man. The Jazz Festival, on the other hand, needs a good slapping. The show started at 5, doors opening at 3, in the Bessborough Gardens. Fine. We showed at 4, set up our chairs, and waited. Good stuff. The first opener started 20 minutes late and played for 1.5 hours. CRAP! Then they left stage and an HOUR later, the second opener started playing. 1.5 hours later, they left the stage. Another hour goes by and Little Richard takes the stage. Again, I will say it was an absolutely fantastic show. LOVED IT! His band was right up there with B.B. King's and James Brown's. By the time he was done, we had been there for 7 freaking hours, from 4 pm to 11 pm.
Every show I have ever been to that has had an opener that band has played for 30 to 40 minutes. If there were two, 30 each. But 1.5 hours for each opener? Plus 2 hours of set-up time inbetween? That is way too much. Why couldn't one of those bands opened for McCoy Tyner last night? The that show might have reached the 1 hour mark.
Don't get me wrong; it was fantastic to here Little Richard play. He is responsible for launching so many careers, least of all Jimi Hendrix. In my mind, the Jazz Festival is batting 0 for 2 this year. Despite his lack of professionalism, the piano they provided McCoy Tyner with last night was out of tune. And their organization of the Little Richard evening was silly.
On a different note, I caught a portion of a rerun of "Queer Eye" the other night. They took that week's guy to Costco. If they are still on the air they should be taken off ASAP.
