Here In The Dark (Our Two Hearts Are One) II Deborah Puckerman II
Mike Chang Mercedes played Super Mario Brothers 3 and cried.
There had never been any romantic feelings between her and Puck. They’d kissed once during their brief relationship, but that was it. Their dates had consisted of nothing more than them holed up at her house while she whupped his skinny white ass and bashed the dumbass in distress, AKA, Princess Peach.
“There are only so many times you can get taken before you’re asking for it.”
She couldn’t have agreed more.
Even after she broke up with him, they continued to get together for their little competitions. She loved Kurt, but he’d never understand her love for the game. Kurt was her boy, but Puck was her Super Mario buddy.
So when Puck got hurt and she realized that they’d never be able to have the rematch Puck had been demanding? It hurt. It hurt like hell.
In all the time they’d played together, he’d only ever been able to beat her on one level. And even then, he’d only just beat her. After the accident, she didn’t touch that level again. Puck’s high score remained untouched, PUCKZILLA would live on in its #1 spot.
Quinn showed up on her doorstep the night after the doctor gave his final diagnosis, arms wrapped tightly around her. Crying. Shaking. Hair a mess.
“The doctors made me leave.”
Broken.
They’d been curled up on her bed for an hour before Quinn spotted the paused game on her TV and fell apart all over again. Mercedes spent an hour rubbing her back as Quinn cried about never listening to Puck’s theories.
“I can’t ask him for them now. How could I? He loved that stupid game and now he’s never going to play it again.”
She explained every one. In detail.
After that, the rest of the night was spent playing together (never once touching Puck’s level). Mercedes was laughing hysterically by the end, doubled over on her bed as tears fell down her face every time Quinn got stuck or died. Quinn almost threw her controller through the television screen.
“How can anyone like this game?!”
“Some of us have actual skill.”
Quinn never played again.
Mercedes was sure the Super Mario Brothers Gods were happy.
She hugged Quinn before she left the next morning and thanked her for coming over.
Puck would never get to play again, but in all the pain that came from the accident, a sliver of light managed to make its way through. She’d managed to regain a friend. When Quinn had Beth and moved back home with her mom, they’d stopped talking like they’d used to. Almost gone back to the way things were before. In all this, though, she was the one Quinn turned to and it felt good.
One door closes and another one opens.
She just wished that Puck’s sight hadn’t been the price.
