Long time no post...
Haven't been at my apartment for a few days. It's weird being home as much as I have been.
Peter graduated from ISU on Friday. I'm extremely proud of him. He's a smart kid and he's passionate about things that I think are very rewarding. I'm pretty stoked on his future.
Haven't been crazy busy with recording, but I think that's been a good thing. I've been able to take a step back and do some research and get myself psyched again. I'd like to get a band in to do a full-length of material. Something we could take our time on and really shape into a larger picture, not just the few most recent tracks a band has written.
That's not to say I'm not excited about upcoming projects. The new Hate stuff is heavy and hateful and it'll be sweet recording them with a dedicated drummer and bassist. Harpoon will be awesome because I want to try some crazy shit with their drum machine. My boss's band, Killing Revolutions, will be cool because they're going for a very slick, pop sound.
Very into Joe Barresi and Kurt Ballou lately. Barresi is so fucking flexible in his style. Compare Melvins' "Stoner Witch" to QOTSA's "Lullabies to Paralyze" to Tool's "10,000 Days". And he's so organic with his approach. Never compresses guitar tracks. Refuses to sound replace or grid-align. Listen to the goddamn snare on the newest ISIS record. Fuck.
Ballou can somehow make the bassiest goddamn guitar tones fit in a mix. I'm talking like 60-80hz or some shit. There practically doesn't need to be a bass guitar on the newest Trap Them, and yet somehow it doesn't sound like a muddy mess of garbage. I can't fucking wait to hear what he does for the new Converge.
Speaking of bassy guitar tones, I bought a 2x15 off Craigslist for $100. I plan on playing the Concert Bass through that. Just need to get a pair of Vintage 30's and a pair of Wizards for my Marshall cab...
