My father was determined to finish the main part of the deck this weekend. The hard part was Saturday; he wanted the outside boards to match the stairs, so there was a lot of cutting involved--the boards go around three sides and end in a 45-degree angle, plus he had to make room for the pergola posts. For Sunday, that left the inner boards, and all that involved was a straight cut at the end and then screwing them in place. This would have gone very quickly, and in fact one half of the deck did...and then it started raining. It rained for the rest of the afternoon, drizzly but steady, then started pouring after 6 PM. This slowed him down, and while he got all but one board in place, that final board is special. It's the center, and it's less than half the width of the other boards, meaning he has to cut it lengthwise, not widthwise; he was going to need my help with it. But with the rain, it wasn't worth doing. Even though he had a canopy up over his saw, it turned out he needed a different saw to complete the job and he didn't want to take it out and set it up in that weather. I don't blame him. At least what's done looks nice, and we definitely can go out there if we want to. I think his goal is to get to that last board when he gets home.
