Suddenly...not chickens?

While on my way to school this morning, I spotted this odd bird on the side of the road. It started crossing the street as I got closer, then realized if it didn't move it would be hit shortly and took off. I went to a bird ID site but couldn't find anything close to what I saw; the closest basically was a sandpiper, I believe. It was odd-looking--sort of the size of a goose, only the body wasn't as large/fat; it had long-ish legs and a short-ish beak. It was also reddish, maybe brownish. Really odd. Maybe I'll go back or look at another site to determine what it really was.

Meanwhile, speaking of geese, I was on my way to the computer lab when something about the school's resident geese made me look to the side. One of them was up in a tree, and as I watched a second flew into the same tree. Some of the branches were sort of flat, creating a good resting place for these web-footed birds. I have actually seen a goose in a tree before, but it's been a while, and it's so rare that I find it amusing. I actually stopped for a moment to watch the second one fly onto the tree. Naturally, I did not have my camera with me; otherwise I totally would have dug it out because it was so comical.
