Regular Band: Concert in the daylight

Our fall concert was yesterday, which is super unusual; our concerts tend to be on Sunday afternoons. As such, it seemed to be sparsely attended compared to normal, but at least people did turn out. One person I noticed in the audience was Mrs. B, mother of big clarinet B and trumpet D, my college friends. I was glad to see her there but I noticed she was on the lower level, not in the balcony. I don't know if it was because she and her husband used to sit up there, or if it's more practical since she uses a walker, but I saw B with his mom before the show.

All in all, I think it went well. Our sound check was interrupted by a number of older people who wandered on in; I'm guessing a senior living bus had dropped them all off early. AD2 is unfazed by that sort of thing and just kept going, and it's not like there was anything said or done that was untoward.

Everything went fine. The big overture was a success; ADB seemed pleased when it was over. There were a few of AD2's pieces where she sort of savored them at the end, taking a moment or two to hold up her baton with her eyes closed before letting it down and sort of allowing us to breathe afterward. Our city song, the one with all the percussion and rhythms, we made it through, but close to the end things got a tiny bit dicey. I felt bad about that, because I was sort of mentally cheering that we'd made it through, and then we got to the last section where it's different than the rest of the piece and there was a slight falter, but we got back on track and it was fine. The piccolo player had me do the service songs on piccolo to warm me up for Stars & Stripes Forever, though I was sort of like, I think I'll be okay. Whatever, it was nice to get some air into it given that it was sitting on its peg the whole rest of the time. And then S&SF went fine. Given that I've played it about 30 times in the past couple of weeks, I was basically on autopilot. I didn't even really look it over before we played it--and we do it standing, albeit in place, so we couldn't really look at our music. Flute E said to us afterward that she thought it was the best we'd ever done it, which is pretty cool. Thank you. All my hard work is paying off, heh. And to think, I get to keep playing it until December...

After the show, I was talking with trombone D while we packed up, and he made the comment that for once, our fall concert ended when it was still light out! That is the plus of doing this on the Saturday before the time change, and not the Sunday of. Sometimes it would be the following Sunday. It was still light out when I got home, though not for much longer. Ah, well, we did it, it's over; time to fully immerse ourselves into the holiday spirit starting tomorrow.
