Banking on one's birthday

Nov 28, 2021 19:02

I'd gotten a couple of checks for my birthday, plus a paycheck this week, so it was time for a bank run prior to grocery shopping yesterday. As is their custom, my mom and grandma both wrote "Happy Birthday!" in the memo section on their checks. I also have to send in my ID when I go to the drive-thru at my bank, so all those combined to have the teller wish me a happy belated birthday when she sent my stuff back. Aw, thanks. I'd requested cash back, in a certain amount, on my deposit slip, so when the envelope came back and was really thick, I was very confused. What's going on here? It turned out that the teller had stuck in three Dum-Dums suckers, heh. I mean, I don't eat candy any longer, but the thought was appreciated. She'd even sent along a cherry one, my favorite. (Alas, I'd had to send some of the money back because it wasn't how I'd requested it, and when dad was like, what's the issue? I went, you'll find out eventually! ...That would be the money for my parents' Christmas cards and I wanted it in a specific denomination.)

I was thankful today was quiet and I didn't have to leave the house--no concert, no birthday celebration, nothing. My dad pointed out, you still have laundry. And the grandma phone call. And practicing. But all of those can be done inside the house, dad. Meanwhile, he was proactive this week and got me some of his laundry without my even asking. Half the time, some stuff doesn't get washed because he realizes after I've done the darks that, oh, it's laundry day! Like, it's been on Sunday since time immemorial. Why is it always a surprise? He did surprise me because he put on a pair of jeans.
Me: Ooh, where are you going?
Dad: All my jammy pants are in the wash.
Me: ...Are you sure you're not going out? Those are leaving the house pants.
No, he really did just chill on the couch all day.

Also, he's pushing for us doing more than the bare minimum with Christmas decorations this year. He's itching to go into the basement to pull up all our stuff. Since this typically falls to me, I have to be into it. Last year, with both of us sick, we simply weren't up to doing much; this year, I have so little free time. It wasn't happening this weekend. I'm off next week so perhaps it'll happen then. Dad really wanted to bring up stuff, but mom hates when the house--or more specifically, the living and dining rooms; the rest of the house apparently doesn't matter--is chaotic, plus she was about to do Zoom Zoom Zumba and *really* didn't want boxes and crap behind her. The only place with enough room--and no clutter currently--is the space between the dining and living rooms. That likely will change in the next week, but I think it'll be fun for the other participants to see our house looking festive. No one else sees it aside from maybe grandma. We'll have to make it look especially cute and/or curated this year.
