The fire escape

I had a weird dream last night, and I think it's partly inspired by what I was doing at work on Friday. It was so quiet for the last two hours, and I was so brain-dead, that I started looking stuff up on Wikipedia and found myself reading through the page on the Our Lady of the Angels fire, the anniversary of which is on Wednesday. This was a devastating fire at a grade school; my grandmother attended that school briefly years earlier. I've read through the Wiki page as well as the memorial website before, but some of the stories are so compelling.

Anyway, last night I dreamt I was in a school and we had to evacuate due to a fire. I'm not sure who I was in this scenario; I wasn't the teacher, and I'm not sure I was a student. I was just there. The teacher led us out of the room, but we were the only people evacuating. And we took this circuitous route, like we had to gather all the children in our particular classroom before we could leave, so we had to go to other rooms to collect them. Like, normally you'd find the first exit and get out. This, we're going through multiple hallways and stairwells and finally, a good 10 minutes later, we're going outside, and the alarm gets pulled, except it's music, not a blaring siren, likely to not scare the kids. Though you'd think they'd need to know that it's something to be concerned about. This is when I see the teacher, and it's a girl I went to both high school and college with, and she's saying she takes fires seriously because both her dad and brother died in a fire, and I was going, how did I not know that? When did that happen? And she says, 30 years ago, and she's crying, so I'm hugging her and letting her know I've also lost relatives in a fire so I know it's awful. (And that anniversary was only a couple weeks ago.) What a weird dream. I think the weirdest part is how we were getting away from this fire, yet the rest of the school was fine. No fire. No smoke.

fire, dreams
