Last week Tuesday, mom got the stunning news that one of the Red Hatters had passed away. It was sudden; the woman had just gone on a trip the week before, and on Sunday/Monday had talked or posted about the severe weather. To find out basically the next day that she was gone was really shocking for her. It appears she passed in her sleep. Mom was in touch with several of the other ladies trying to figure out what happened.
Today was the funeral. There's a family in the area with several funeral homes (and I went to college with a relative), and mom knew the home was off 25 and another major road, but she kept thinking it was 38, placing it in Geneva. Mom realized on the way there that, wait a minute, where am I supposed to be going? She had to pull over and read the obituary to realize, oh, it's at 25 and 64--St. Charles, just as she thought, town-wise. Oh, mom. She doesn't normally go to these things by herself so she wouldn't typically drive, but dad didn't know this woman. Anyway, she got there okay, and the luncheon afterward was at a new restaurant, kitty-corner from the Colonial where they always meet. How new? Today was its opening day. I'm curious how that happened, but all went well. This restaurant takes the place of the former Gino's East, which is sad for me; I have memories of eating there with my bookstore coworkers, and even a special pizza dinner in high school thanks to my chemistry teacher. It's Southern, and mom came home with a biscuit and honey butter sauce which she gifted to me. Nice. I know she's sad that her friend has passed away, but at least they did get to see each other earlier this year, once in-person meetings resumed.
