All about Tim...and the Olympics...and David Sedaris?

I got an IM from my friend Tim the other night...Monday, in fact, after the most recent weird trip to the grocery store. It also marked the first time since I got back that I'd been able to go on AOL all by myself. I'm thinking maybe AOL was mad that I ignored it for a week, and I had to prove that I still loved it for it to come back around. *sigh* I have no actual relationships, so I have to have spats with my computer. Whatever.

Anyway, so I haven't really heard from Tim since...what, October? That's when he had a housewarming party for his new place. He's since moved and gotten a different job. He seems like he's doing okay, which is great, and I'm trying to weasel myself in to see his place and his roommate (our mutual friend from college, the one who made me realize I could see music before my eyes when no sheet music existed for what he played on the piano--freaky, eh? I could go more into it if you asked me nicely enough). *weasel weasel weasel* I sent him the link to this page, and he wrote back and complained that there was nothing about him on here. Tim, here you go! See, I have to have current contact with you for me to write about you... :P~~~ But I suppose I'll be nice--Tim, look, I'm being nice! Write it down--and reciprocate. Check out Tim's very own website if you want to learn more about him.

Also on Monday...what a day...my family received a letter from my cousin Lindsey. She is five years and two days younger than me and graduated from college in the spring. She's from Southern California--enough said--and part of her graduation gift (it seems) was a trip to the Olympics! Now, she's not just going just to go. One of her friends is an Olympian! Holy cow. How do I get friends like that?

Breaking news...to update you on Lindsey's friend, Kim Rhode, I went to search her on Yahoo!, and this is what I found:

Rhode takes gold in women's double trap

August 18, 2004

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- American Kim Rhode rallied in the final rounds to win the gold medal in double trap Wednesday, staking a unique claim as the first and last winner of the Olympic event.

Rhode won the 1996 gold when double trap was introduced at the Atlanta Olympics, and she now owns the 2004 medal in the event, which is being eliminated. She also won the bronze in 2000.

"It's an amazing feeling," said Rhode, of El Monte, Calif. "I don't think it's quite sunk in yet that I've won. It usually hits me when I get home."

Rhode was perfect through the ninth round, but a miss left the score even after 12 rounds. Rhode regained the lead two rounds later after a miss by silver medalist Lee Bo Na of South Korea, and she held it through the rest of the 20-round competition.

The bronze medal went to Gao E of China.

It's too bad that Kim's event is being eliminated, but how thrilling to get a gold...and for my cousin to see it. Whee!

I'm two degrees away from an Olympian...(thank you Kevin Bacon)

So Tim wrote me a letter after we IMed each other and after reading my journal. I think I said this somewhere in here...and I know I wrote it to Tim...that I liken my style to David Sedaris, even though I have yet to read him. I know what David's about, so I'm similar...I just grew up in Chicago and have no siblings, but I did have a dog. Man, do I have stories about him. That may be my first nonfiction book, about the Gizmo-bear. He was whacked. Anyway, so Tim does think I have a Sedaris aura about my writing (my words, not his). His words (don't mind if I quote you, do you?): "Still, though, you may indeed have a future as a female David Sedaris, ripping apart the suburban landscape and the incredibly stupid and self-absorbed people who live here." It's kind of fun and it makes the day go by more quickly. Plus, it helps that I am self-absorbed as well. :)

Tim, are you happy now? Leave me a comment to let me know you saw this, okay?
