Winter warm-up

Alternate title: It's warm enough to melt stuff!

Finally, finally, finally, we've hit warmer weather. Last week it was so cold, I was thinking, it's -7F. When I see a seven in the temperature, I expect it to be on the plus side and preferably have another number after it. And, frankly, I'd simply take a two with another number after it at this point. Yes, it had been that cold. We had been below 20F continuously for roughly two weeks. On Sunday, we rose above 20F. Today, we rose above freezing (that's 32F for anyone using Celsius, or living under a rock).

This did not come without its issues. The warmer weather came in yesterday, but brought with it precipitation. Oh, hey, it's raining! Except it's only 22F! Uh-oh. Not good. And of course I'm realizing this as I'm driving somewhere; you'll hear about that soon. Earlier in that same car trip, though, I crossed the river and saw that it had frozen completely over. It had snowed a few days prior and it was just a sea of white on either side of the bridge. Just…what. It's rare for there to not be any signs of moving water on the Fox. It was incredible enough that I did stop at the forest preserve on my way home--treading carefully, since it was slick--to take a few pictures. Because seriously. Where is the water? Although from that angle, it did appear that there was a slight area under the bridge that was still liquid. Interesting.

It's truly amazing how warm 20F feels when you haven't felt it in a while, not to mention 36F (the temp when I left work today). Amazingly, it's supposed to get near--or above--50F on Thursday. Holy cow! What an incredible temperature swing. And then it's going to be below 20F again come Sunday. Sigh. But it was nice to feel like you didn't have to warm up your car for 5-10 minutes before driving anywhere. The amount of gas we've been expending lately has been a lot.
