It's birthday season at my job. Both of my coworkers who work directly with me have birthdays right now--my young coworker's was yesterday, while the one that's older than both of us put together, his is today. (He's the resident jokester, so yesterday he told another person that you weren't allowed near our workspace unless you had a birthday within the last three weeks. Oh, phew, that means I'm allowed. :P )
It just so happens that our main room renter was gifted two mini bundt cakes the other day. Her husband is diabetic, and she didn't need them in her house, so why not bring them to us? Sure, we'll help you out--even me, and I barely eat work treats anymore. One was red velvet, the other chocolate peppermint. I've had the red velvet before (mom's gotten those cakes a few times), so I tried the chocolate peppermint. The cakes are small enough that you could potentially eat the whole thing yourself, but still big enough that one might feel like a glutton to do such a thing. Besides, I just wanted a taste, so I took a quarter of it. I then wiped off the knife and handed it to the young coworker. She chose the red velvet. She proceeded to cut half the cake, place it on a paper towel, then go, I'm small, I don't need that much…and then she cut the remaining cake in the container in half, put one half of that on the paper towel, then took the remaining quarter in the container. Uh…what did you just do? She said, well, I'm going to take my break in the other building. …And? See, to avoid touching all the cake--especially since we all know you've recently been sick, since you got me and subsequently several others sick--you only touch the piece you want. You don't touch the rest of it and leave it out in the air uncovered just so you can carry your piece around in the container.
She's still young, and there's some social awkwardness we're working on overcoming, but…this kinda took the cake.
