This winter has been pretty mild, as these things go. We've had some wild winters as of late, so this one hasn't been too bad. Considering we started off the season--day before my birthday--with 8" of snow, it did not bode well. But in this area, that was our worst snowfall to date. We'll take it. (We couldn't say that if we were in Kankakee County or Northwest Indiana, which got a blizzard a few weeks back, but...we're not, so there you go.)
We've hit a warm spell; it's supposed to be in the upper 50s/lower 60s the whole week, albeit with rain, but that's fine. The birds have been chirping in the early morning for weeks, which is what you expect a month from now. The trees already have buds on them. That's not really something I tend to pay close attention to, but it's pretty obvious this year. And then, today...
I made Chinese for dinner, and was looking for a particular glass container to cook the orange chicken in; mom used it during her banana bread phase and neither fully cleaned it nor put it away. I was about to scrub away at it when I glanced in the yard--and hello, my little friends! So nice to see you waddling around back there. There was no quackage, only webbed feet bringing their bodies close to the house, then away. I did get a couple pictures of the pair. However, they appeared to object to me trying to get them to hop onto the deck, and they flew away after a few minutes. Dad almost immediately went onto the deck for a smoke, and I poked my head out to talk to him; that's when I noticed dark fur and a long tail meandering slowly in the neighbors' yard. Hmm. Wonder if the kitty scared them off.
Oh well. They'll be back.
