Good day, part 2

Nov 22, 2013 20:55

Today was along the lines of yesterday, though not *quite* as good, but still pleasant. And this was despite there being flurries in the morning. This was definitely not like last year's birthday, where it was probably 60F.

The cookies went over well. I brought two containers, because they wouldn't all fit in one, and the first container was empty by 9:30. Everyone was happy. :)

I spent much of the day working on my project, and I planned to start cleaning up about 2:45--I have lots of boxes of things spread all over the place, so it takes time to pack it all back up--and naturally I got caught doing other things for people. I didn't clock out until 3:30! So much for not working late on my birthday.

Now here was the real bummer. Dad had talked about getting Giordano's for dinner, my favorite pizza, and he was going to get it on his way home from work. Well, he didn't work the whole day and so he decided to order it closer to when I'd be home. I called to let him know I was coming, thinking maybe he'd already gotten it. When I got home? No pizza. What? He said, I didn't know what you wanted! Uh, we've discussed this before; stuffed sausage like we always used to get. It's pretty much the only thing we've ever gotten from there. I realize we haven't had it in years, but still. This is a 30+ year tradition for us. So, yeah, no hot and cheesy pizza waiting for me when I got home; I didn't get to eat it for an hour. Sigh. Oh well.

I didn't really get gifts, but that's okay. I got a card and some money from my parents, and hilariously... So I was looking at the Target ad the other day, and I made a minor big deal over the Advent calendars. I used to have one--okay, two of the same--back when I was a kid, these scratch-and-sniff ones from Avon. I don't know what happened to them, but I loved them and reused them every year. The Target one came with chocolates; the Avon ones didn't. Mom thought I was reusing one that came with chocolate. I'm sad, but I wasn't *that* sad. So, anyway, I came downstairs this morning to find a card and an Advent calendar. I laughed pretty hard. And then I come to find out that mom had a hard time finding the calendar and had to have two different people at Target help her find it. Wow. Didn't realize how cutthroat it could be to find one of those.

My grandfather normally calls to sing "Happy Birthday," but he's getting old--as I would later remind him; he swore at me when I did :P--and he forgot, so I had to call him. At least he knew exactly why I called and immediately started singing. We talked for a half-hour, and within a minute of hanging up with him the phone rang again and it was my goddaughter. She was stunned that I knew who it was; I told her we have Caller ID. She said, you know my phone number? I said, it gives your full name. Rats! she said. :) We only talked for about a minute, but it was nice to hear from her, even if her mom had to encourage her to call me.

Considering the somber anniversary surrounding this day, I have to say it was pretty good. I've known for years that this birthday wouldn't be the happiest ever, but on my end it turned out okay, and it'll be nice to get away from people talking about the date. I swear, it seems like this day has been in the news for the past two months.

I have my own dorky anniversary to go along with it. Thirty years ago today, I got a special dolly, the one that was my favorite throughout childhood. My mom worked for an ad agency at the time where they did ads for this type of doll, and since mom was the only one with a child she was able to take it home. I got the doll and immediately fell in love with her. This was the day before Thanksgiving. The day after, there was so much pandemonium surrounding the doll and its ilk that mom's coworkers actually asked if they could have it. Really, you want to take a little girl's dolly away from her? Shame on you. Because I ended up with a prototype or sample Cabbage Patch Kid, and we all know the rest of the story. And, come to think of it, I always thought the dolls in the ads looked like my doll. Now, I realize there was probably a reason for that.
