All right, I've turned a few characters into women in my time, but that was part of the friggen plot. One was cursed by a god, and one could shape shift between sexes (and other forms). But never have I turned a character to another sex for no other reason than I wanted to write that character as the opposite sex. I mean, really, people

I think that a good portion of the writers who do the gender switching do so because they can't admit that they like the idea of male/male sex, or two men being in love, period. So, to mask the fact that they think Male character A loves Male character B, they have to turn one of them into a woman, so it's het sex.

I've only read a few fics where the gender switch made sense, and then it was something that happened during the fic, instead of the fic being a total AU where one of the characters is a female.

And to show my ignorance - what is "CIS"?

Supposedly, it's people who are just the gender they were born as. Girly girls, and boyish boys.
