"Who do you think you are?"
Will looked up to see Emma, standing stiffly in the doorway to his office.
“Excuse me?”
“This thing isn’t over between us. Seriously? You have no right to decide when it’s over. It’s over because I say it’s over!”
“Emma-”
“No! Stop changing your mind!” She cried, making her way to his desk. “Who are you?”
“Who am I?”
“One minute, you’re this sweet man,” she started, fighting back tears, “who makes me feel like I’ve found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. Then you break my heart and still have the nerve to tell me that it’s not over between us?” She paused, as though waiting for an answer from him.
He didn’t have one.
“I’ve made up my mind.” She said, pacing back and forth.
“Em, please-”
She stopped in front of him, placing her hands on the edge of his desk.
“You’re not good for me.”
She looked away. It was too quiet.
“That’s not true.” He said, finally. Her gaze met his as if to ask ‘Excuse me?’
“Emma Pillsbury. Who are you?” She remained silent. “When I first met you, I thought you were the shyest, sweetest woman I’ve ever met. And you still are.” She gave him a warning look. She wasn’t going to put up with his games any longer. “But since then, you have stood up for what you believe in" he said, enticing her to glance at him, "at least three times, including now. Granted, twice it was to me; but how often were you able to do that before?”
“Never.” She admitted softly.
“I think - No, I know I can help you discover who you are. I’m sorry I hurt you, and it doesn’t justify what I did. But I swear, Emma, I will never hurt you again.”
“What are you saying?”
"Maybe I'm not quite good enough for you.."
"That's not -" she tried to object, but he continued.
"-but I know you, and I want to help you get to know yourself.”
"I know myself,” she said forcefully.
“Not if you can’t admit that you’re still in love with me.” He refuted.
She flinched, then scolded herself silently.
“I have to go," she said, trying to sound as indifferent as she possibly could.
She hated him.
He was right.
