"I thought of Soda and Steve. What if one of them saw the other killed? Would that make them stop fighting? No, I thought, maybe it would make Soda stop, but not Steve. He'd go on hating and fighting. Maybe that was what Bob would have done if it had been Randy instead of him."   - The Outsiders

You know, I never noticed that quote before. I'm telling you, I am seeing so much more now than I ever did, just by highlighting the book. I don't know, it makes me read it for the words, not for the big picture. If that made sense. Anyway, I just thought that was interesting. I mean it really says something about Steve. He and Soda are complete opposites, but they're best friends. Obviously Steve has a different dimension to him or else I have a hard time believing he and Soda would be such good friends. And honestly, I think if it had been Randy that died, Pony's right, Bob would have just gotten worse. The comparison to Dally is what makes me think that. He's too stubborn and too broken to give up the fight or to realize the error of his ways, like Randy did. I'll probably make another big post in a few days, because I just got up to the rumble scene and there was a ton of stuff in those chapters that was jumping out at me. I think they're my favorite ones because they just have average life instead of constant action. And they involve all of the gang, and it's always fun to see how they play off each other and act when they're together.

I started an Evie story. Pathetic, I know. I don't have very much for it yet though, so I might just scrap it anyway. I don't know, I'll have to see where it heads or if I get any inspiration, as cheesy as that sounds. Before I go to college, I am determined to write a story that I actually have a plot outline for. It has yet to happen, but it's on my list of things to do. Along with many, many other completely random things.

I don't know why I'm thinking about this (okay, that's a lie, it was because I was glancing at the cover of Dreamland out of the corner of my eye), but I love the new covers of Sarah Dessen's books. They were first published with these very juvenile-looking covers, but then a few years back (I think when to celebrate the release of The Truth About Forever), they redid all of them with photographs. And they look really great. Honestly. I mean, they really fit her books much better than the old covers did. I think she is often passed by because people think her books are light, fluffy reads, which on the surface they are. The top level is just a nice teen romance story, but when you look deeper, it's so much more than that. This Lullaby is about Remy and Dexter and the start of their relationship, but it's also about Remy's home life and her past, and it's about her commitment and trust issues. The Truth About Forever is about Macy and Wes and their friendship, but it's also about Macy's lasting trauma at watching her father die, and it's about rebellion and not judging people. It's about the idea of "perfect" and whether or not such a thing is possible. Just Listen is about Annabel and Owen, but it's also about friends and being backstabbed. It's about sexual assault and it's about being afraid, and it's about fitting in. It's about anorexia and pictures and modeling. Okay, I would go on and explain the levels of some of her other books as well, but those are the three I'm most familiar with and I'm sure you all are yawning by now. I'm just such a huge advocate of Dessen's books that I tend to go off on random discussions of them, so bear with me. And also bear with me while I copy and paste images of her book covers into here, just because I think they're pretty.

All right, I'm done with that, I promise.

In fact, I'm just gonna leave this entry at that.
