Food for thought- I wish I could eat that photo.

I was out to Chevy's tonight, celebrating a friend's belated birthday, and I could not help to notice how the visual appearance of the menu effects what you order.  I do not know how many times I have fought between what sounds good as a plate description, what I have exprienced as delicious, and what looks good.  Sometimes even after trying a dish once and thinking it was ok, the photo can lead you to try the dish again and see if this chef can cook it better.

Fighting impulses a menu can create takes some will.  The fonts, formats, and background design are constant throughout the menu and images are well placed to peek your interest in one of sections.  So while a person may not eat pork, the attractive picture gains attention to the fact they have a similar dish with chicken.

Drinks and deserts (commonly known as the food that resturants make their money on) have a lot more pictures on these pages.  I would say tonight the small menu advertising drinks had four different drinks shown on it, yet was much smaller than the size of the dinner menu.

Food chains seem to have grasped the marketing through their menu.  At a TGI Fridays, Applebees, and even McDonalds the menus are very colorful.  It contains beautifully high quality photoes of the food.  Even the amount of space well thought out.

Family owned or fancy resturants emphais selling their food through quality service and written description of the dishes.  Their menu also have constant font, but colors are less varied.  Whether this due to the lack of marketing knowledge or not probably depends on which resturant you are speaking about.

Have I made you hungry yet?
