Hogwarts doesn't seem to have any classes in which children study literature (poems, plays, novels, etc). If Harry had continued on at his Muggle school, what kind of literature might he have studied in the normal course of things? I was told that it's incorrect to call Hogwarts third year students "students," and that I should call them "pupils." Doesn't JKR frequently use the word "student"? Or is that only in the American editions? And if she does use the word "student," is she being newfangled or odd?

I didn't see anything in the "education" tag entries. Wikipedia implies that students could stop attending school after their GCSEs around age 16 before the 2008 act to shift that age to 18. Would that have been true in 1991? And was it possible for a student to simply drop out without finishing certain qualifications or switch to home-schooling ( Read more... )

I'm writing a pre-Hogwarts AU in which Harry takes refuge in a library to get away from Dudley's gang, and he ends up getting much more interested in reading than he was in canon.
