When he took the Dark Mark, he felt immense pleasure in the pain that flayed his senses. He was young and yearning for acceptance, and even a little bit of power. He had enough of the days when others would torment him with blows and words and wasted opportunities; he was ready to pledge allegiance to a wizard who promised to right terrible wrongs in the Wizarding World.
The memory of his broken mother and the memory of Lily fueled his desire to avenge all the injustice that fate dealt him.

After hearing of the prophecy, the attacks on the members of his Hogwarts class, and senseless violence against innocent Muggles, his mind broke under the stunning revelation that the Dark Lord was reneging on his smooth words. His Pensieve was bursting with all the terrible things he had seen and done, and his hands were seemingly slick with blood.
Albus could not understand what he saw, but thankfully choose to trust in him.

So the prophecy would prove true.
Now, Granger just couldn’t shut her trap even when she were bloodied, and racked with pain.
“You-you are-are-the fulcrum!” she managed to gasp out before passing out.
A shout gained his attention then, and he saw Potter sprawled on the ground.
He turned his wand on his former Master and sneered as he saw Potter cast the Killing Spell.
And the balance between good and evil was once again restored.
