The spell brands his skin. It burns, sizzles, claims. The pain is hot and grips at his heart, wrenches at his soul.
The other recruits are bowed and snivelling. The air is heavy with howls of agony, the laughter of those who have gone before - for whom the pain is but a shadow of remembered innocence.
He can barely hear the sounds. They are dim compared to the roaring in his veins. Time is slowed to a trickle of black blood. His nostrils are filled with the scent of smouldering flesh.
That night he is marked to his very core.
