Pansy dashed upstairs and flung herself down on her bed, “How could he?” She sobbed into her pillow, “And with a Mudblood?”

“Pansy.” Her mother stood in the doorway, “Whatever is the matter?”

Pansy sat up and quickly scrubbed her face with her sleeve, “Draco, Millicent told me that Draco cheated on...”

“The Bulstrodes have always been the worst sort of gossips. Ignore her and her lies.” Her mother snapped. Crisply, she added, “Now, if you are through with your pity party, we do have guests to attend to. I expect you down soon.”

“Yes, mother.” As always, I obey.

I promise you, I will keep you safe.

At her funeral, Harry stood there, too numb for tears. She took the spell meant for him, saving his life at the cost of her own.

Rain sheeted down, the heavens crying for the hero who couldn’t.

The parties she would never attend, the conversations she would never share, the wedding cake she would never cut seemed to scream at him. Sick, Harry lurched away from her tombstone, swearing never to come back again.

He returned the next day with a fist full of roses and another empty promise on his soul.
