Hermione didn't understand.
The squashy armchair she loved to curl up in, with a book on her knees and Crookshanks in her lap, was gone. So were the Gryffindor common room, Hogwarts, and all of Wizarding Britain. She might have accepted it if natural forces were the cause, after all, a hurricane knew no compassion, a volcano no mercy. But how could human hands have wrought such destruction? How could someone with a heart have ripped out the beating hearts of others?
Even though she'd seen it with her own eyes, Hermione still didn't understand.
And hoped she never will.
