“And what, Longbottom, is that?”

Neville trembled under Snape’s icy glare.

“It’s a plant, sir,” Seamus said, barely suppressing a snigger.

“I can see it’s a plant, Finnegan. Ten points from Gryffindor!”

Snape rounded on Neville.

“Why, Longbottom, is there a plant rather than a potion in your cauldron?”

“I-it just grew th-there, P-professor,” Neville stammered.

The class laughed. Snape assigned detention and swept disdainfully past Neville’s desk.

Neville bowed his head. “It was those mandrake roots,” he muttered. “I couldn’t cut them.”

He stared down at his cauldron, cheeks burning.

And from the cauldron’s depths, his creation stared back.

Neville fed his secret fearfully that summer. He wasn’t sure what he’d created, but he didn’t think that there had ever been a - whatever it was - before.

If only he knew quite what he’d done. It had all been a mistake, but he hadn’t been able to throw the plant away. Not when it had blinked at him like that.

It was all right though. Audrey, as he’d named her, was safe in his cauldron in the wardrobe. He only realised the problem when he tried to pack his Potions equipment.
He couldn’t move his cauldron; Audrey had taken root.
