The Chess Set

Title: The Chess Set (I know. There was a distinct lack of creativity in the Dymphna household this week.)
House: Ravenclaw
Word Count: 100
Characters: Young Remus
Challenge: Quills Gone Wild

Remus likes spending time in the attic. It’s quiet, and full of discarded treasures; he is always finding new old things. Today his great discovery is his grandfather’s chess set.

Remus barely remembers his mum’s father, a Muggle who lived far away. As he unpacks the pieces, he notices how perfectly they are formed; they seem almost alive. But they don’t move unless Remus moves them himself, which puzzles him. He speaks to them softly, encouragingly, but they remain motionless.

He is disappointed, but not terribly worried. His parents will figure out what’s wrong. There isn’t anything they can’t fix.
