But they don’t move unless Remus moves them himself, which puzzles him. He speaks to them softly, encouragingly, but they remain motionless.

No; this is quite creative. At first it's just a cute character portrait of Lupin, but with that last line it becomes so much more. It really makes me feel for him. I like the way you used the entire drabble as a set up for that last line. Good stuff.

I like the idea that Remus thinks the chess set is broken because it doesn't move. Nice use of his background, by the way.

Poor Remus. His parents couldn't fix the one thing they'd have most wanted to fix, though, could they?
