The potion wasn’t working. Remus looked in panic about the room. Everyone else was calm. That’s what the Draft of Peace did after all. James and Sirius were lounging over their cauldrons in silence. Snape looked positively angelic. Even Peter was smiling beatifically. Remus’s potion should be right - he’d helped Peter with his.
He stayed behind after class and asked what had gone wrong, his friends hovering in the doorway of the dungeon.
The Potions Master shifted his weight from foot to foot.
“Your potion was fine, Lupin,” he said, lowering his voice. “But it’ll only work on humans.

“Up!”
For the first time ever, James’s broomstick did not move upon his command. James frowned, cleared his throat, and tried again.
“Up!”
Nothing. James felt a funny feeling creep up in his chest.
“Up!”
The broom stayed completely still. James was angry and panicky. He was Head-boy, Quidditch Captain, studying for six N.E.W.T.s ... why wouldn’t the bloody broom do as he said?
“UP!”
Not a twitch.
Was his magic going? Red sparks shot from his wand. No, that was fine, so why …?
He heard a helpless giggle behind him and span round, relieved, ashamed and furious.
“Lily!”

“Stupid, poor quality muck,” Sirius roared, flinging a small object at the wall and watching it smash with pleasure. That was the last time he bought anything from Mundungus Fletcher.
He’d had to gird himself to use it. It went against every sense he had. But if Remus was a spy - and he had to be, there was no other option - then he didn’t deserve decency.
So Sirius had concealed the tiny sneakoscope in his pocket and, feeling an utter cad, had gone to see his best friend, in search of cold hard truth.
But the bloody thing hadn’t worked.
Title: Peter

He used to hope his wand was defective. He moaned at his mother until she got him a new one. It hadn’t helped.
Then he knew that he was stupid. That’s how his friends thought of him. That was why they always made him stand guard. That was why James would never copy his homework, even if he had done it. That was why Remus was the prefect, not him. That was why Sirius made fun of him.
They thought he was useless.
Peter tried the spell again and sighed. He was useless. He couldn’t even conjure the Dark Mark.
