Note: I don't actually think this would happen, but it's an AU that occurred to me.
It began long before the day Ron first saw them walking together, hand in hand. Maybe it all started when everyone couldn't believe he'd made prefect, not Harry - as though Ron had somehow stolen it.
Maybe it was when Hermione showed up at the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum; he ought to have known then that she'd always choose another.
Maybe it went back to the first time Malfoy jeered at him for having no money.
At any rate, it didn't begin when Hermione chose Harry. But it ended when Pettigrew pressed the moneybag into Ron's hand and whispered, "Welcome."
