What makes a drabble great?

Jan 07, 2007 21:06

Thanks to all the wonderfuly creative folks who have participated in The Clinic's songfic drabble exercise, there have been more than just dribs and drabs of drabbles posted lately to the Housefic comms.  There's been a whole lot of drabbles written, and a lot of drabbles to read.

Having had all this practice lately, we thought it might be timely to discuss what makes a drabble great.

As a reader, what makes a drabble wonderful?  What things make you fall in love with a tiny, 100-word snippet of story?

As a writer, how do you makes those things happen?  How do you avoid the pitfalls of the format?  What are the keys to writing a great drabble?

PS -- January has brought some new entries to the songfic drabble exercise.  Please keep checking that link and sharing feedback with contributing authors!
