I think this could happen at any hotel if the front desk clerk doesn't pay attention, or doesn't care. :)

I will admit that a lot of times, it's a lot easier to avoid the guest making a scene because you won't give them the AAA rate if they don't have the proper ID at checkin.

I work at a best western. My boss says to make sure they have them, but I just dont have time sometimes to check. And sometimes people just forget them. I am a AAA member...and I dont have my id with me all the time. PLus...I mean...I guess I am just really nice...and I guess sometimes I just let people get a lower rate. Our rates our through the roof.

We almost never check for AAA ID's unless they're being a total pain in the ass. A lot of times when we have a pitiful walk-in, we just give out that discount because it's usually only like $20 or $30 cheaper than our rack rate and the guest usually appreciates that little bit of a save. But also, sometimes our AAA rate is MORE than our rack rate (yes, our discounted rates are sometimes more than our rack rate) so I advise agents to trick the guest into thinking they're saving money when the guest is a jerk.
FD Agent: I have a special guest at the desk who is a VIP but only to himself. He says he's a AAA memeber, is that rate available tonight?
Me: ::checks:: Yes, and it's $20 more than what we're selling at. The market code is...
