Random stuff

Some notes while rolling through Connecticut on my way to Boston:
  • I have to buy new noise canceling headphones. Random bursts of static does not count as "noise canceling" in my book. This is a mission for before I head back south Saturday.
  • Sometimes a particular line will just capture a moment so well that it burns that particular work into my memory. "Ooh, cake?" (from Monday's Heroes) is one of them.
  • They may have canceled Pushing Daisies just in time. The storyline with Chuck's dad really did nothing for me.
  • Leverage somewhat reminds me of Hustle (and I'd imagine that was intentional), but I find it interesting that an American take requires the injection of violence.
  • It was interesting to see The Amazing Race visit an area I actually know well (the Portland area) and feature places I've been. On top of that, I was talking on the phone with the Portland crowd when it came on tv (completely unexpected).
  • I didn't really have anyone I was rooting for this time out, but it was nice that the sibs with the hot sister won so that she got maximum airtime.
  • Top Chef has been pretty boring so far. Arrogant Europeans and snotty lesbians aren't exactly new archetypes for reality tv. I'm pretty much down to being entertained by the hot girl who always looks like there's something smelly two feet in front of her and the really tall black woman who looks completely surprised 24/7.
  • I have been watching far too much t.v. of late. That's what happens when you come home late from work every night too tired to do anything else. And you have TiVo.
  • I'm getting through The Lies of Locke Lamora. Hustle in a mild D&D world. Pretty good, though I find myself wishing I knew less about the plans for the con than I do.
  • Way too much travel recently. Here's been my November and December: Upstate NY. DC. DC again, followed by Texas in the same week. Florida (for Thanksgiving). Nowhere for a week, though I did start Monday morning in Florida. NY over the weekend for Christmas shopping. Boston. DC next week.
  • At least I'm not flying for the rest of the year.
  • Despite deciding to stay home through the holidays, I'm contemplating a one night venture to Atlantic City. It is a trip, but midweek it's cheap and I think I need an opportunity to turn my brain off.
  • Had my foot stepped on in Times Square. In my youth, the asshole (who didn't even look back when I started cursing at him) would have found himself stuffed down a storm drain. But I have matured. Now I only think about it.
  • Watched Be Kind, Rewind using my newly discovered power of renting via XBox. Good flick, but I think it requires being in the right mood.
  • Got my tickets for NYCC 2009. It's going to be in the middle of a busy travel month (aren't they all now), but I can't not go. Especially not if I might be able to meet Amber Benson.
  • Paper got accepted for AIAA. I'll be heading for Seattle in April, with hopefully a dip toward Portland along the way.
  • Also attending a conference in Orlando in February. Looks like 2009 will offer many chances to catch up with friends.
  • We're still in CT (dag, they slow the trains down severely going through here), but I have no bullets left, if you pardon the expression.
