Summary (this chapter): McCoy helps Spock save the day.

Chapter Ten: Survival of the Fittest
This time when the Enterprise arrived in orbit around Cygnus V, no one noticed them, and they were able to locate Jamie this time.
However, they could not beam her onboard the Enterprise, forcing Spock and McCoy to head down to the surface of the planet in a shuttlecraft disguised as an Armani merchant shuttle, piloted by Lt. Colleen Everett(1).
Not that they needed have bothered, as everyone on the planet was focused on the Arthos, where Jamie was currently staring down a representative of the local fauna.
Once Lt. Everett had flown back up to the Enterprise, Spock and McCoy (disguised as relatively poor Armani merchants) broke into the Arthos prison, where they met Parthosian.
"Where have they taken Captain Kirk?" Spock demanded of the dog-faced alien.
"There is nothing you can do for her," Parthosian replied. "She has been taken to the Arthos."

The creature yowled in pain as Jamie bit down on its paw with all the strength she could muster. The instant it released her, Jamie rolled away from the dog-lion, back onto her feet.
The creature, realizing its prey was getting away, turned towards Jamie in preparation to pounce on her a second time.
She looked around her, desperate for a weapon of any kind with which to defend herself, but there was nothing, not even a rock, with which she could fight.
~*~
"You can't go out there, Spock," McCoy reminded the half-Vulcan.
"Nor can I stand by and do nothing, Doctor," Spock reminded him.
"What we need is something to use as weapons," McCoy remarked, casting about for anything resembling weapons.
"At this distance, anything we throw at the creature might strike the Captain," Spock objected as McCoy found what he wanted, something even better than weapons.
"You have a phaser, Spock?" McCoy asked, disregarding the First Officer's observation.
"Of course," Spock replied. "Why?"
"As soon as I've attracted the beast's attention away from Jamie, I'm going to need you to take it down, preferably before it eats me," McCoy explained(2).
~*~
Any second now and the creature would pounce. Jamie almost wished that the dog-lion would get on with it and kill her before the suspense did.
The sound of someone hitting a large gong caught Jamie off-guard and she jumped in surprise.
The creature turned its attention on the intruder, and immediately began to run at him, with the intention of killing the intruder.
But before it could reach McCoy, a well-aimed phaser cut the creature down.
The crowd boo'd at the intrusion of Spock and McCoy on their entertainment, but the two men ignored them, hailing the Enterprise to request an emergency beam out.

1. Lt Colleen Everett shows up again later in the series.
2. I was thinking of having Spock come up with the idea of using himself as bait, but it felt a bit too human for him. Besides, Spock would have never said "preferably before it eats me".
