Time for that old vidding meme to start making the rounds once again. Y/y?

I snurch from rhoboat:

If you want commentary on aspects of any vid I've made, post a comment. Let me know if there are particular questions you'd like me to answer, choices you'd like to talk about, or elements of the vid you'd like me to expound on (favorite moments, etc.).

I would like to hear allll about your Tabula Rasa Dr. who vid!
Every time I watch it I am blown away by it and find new little details that I hadn't noticed before.
I guess I'm just wondering what made you decide to use the stills and how long it took you and how you went about editing with them.
I'd be interested to hear pretty much whatever you have to say about that vid :)

Also! Mind if I snag this? It sounds fun

Oh how sweet of you! :) Well Tabula Rasa is indeed one of my fave vids that I've produced. Everything about it just came together and worked immediately. I didn't have to battle that vid at all.

What made me decide to do the vid was vortexchallenge. That vidding challenege lasted only a little bit, but it really pushed me as a vidder to go into these territories I'd never venture on my own and really think outside the box, which is where I like to live now in terms of vidding ( ... )

With your more experimental vids, do you get the concept or music first?

Are there vids you've wanted to do, but haven't for some reason?

I think I tend to get inspired by the music, so it depends on the song. Sometimes I hear a kick ass song and I literally try to match it up with one of my fandoms because I desperately want to vid the song. And once I pair it with a fandom, that's when the images start coming of what the vid should be. ANd most of the time the images are more intense than what I'm capable of doing in Vegas, so the next step is always to try and cheat and achieve what I see with what I can actually do in the editing stage. So it's this constant creative battle. But yes, most of the time it's music first, then concept. Only when there was vortexchallenge was it concept first, then music.

Are there vids you've wanted to do, but haven't for some reason?Oh hell yes! It's actually the most frustrating bit of vidding for me. The fact that my "vid songs" playlist consists of like 50 songs and I just can't vid them all. It's a sort of pick and choose process, and most of the time the vid that's easiest ( ... )

Interesting. I have a list of songs I want to vid, but don't have a fandom for, so I feel you.

What's the song you most want to vid right now?

It's so frustrating when there's so much great music out there. Gah.

What's the song you most want to vid right now?
At the moment it's a 3 way tie between Handlebars, that Smashing Pumpkins song from the Watchmen preview (which I sort of started playing around with today in Vegas) and this song called "Marble House" by the Knife. What about you?

Yay! I like this meme. It like totally needs to make the rounds at least annually.

Anwyway, I have questions about "Ashes to Ashes." First, how long did it take you create said masterpiece? Second, dow do you come up with visual tricks like the one at 1:55? I mean, if I look at it frame-by-frame, I can see how it's done. The technical isn't really the issue. I guess what I'm wondering is do you set out to do little eye-catching bits like that when you start a vid? Or is it something that somehow comes to you as you go along? And can I haz ur brainz?

All righty. "Ashes to Ashes."

First, how long did it take you create said masterpiece?
Let's see, it usually takes me two weeks to get a vid done IF I'm super good and spend all my free time working on it intensely. That doesn't really happen too often anymore and my discipline's been way off (hence my not having a vid for ages). But I think for this vid I was pretty good, so I'd say like two weeks.

Second, dow do you come up with visual tricks like the one at 1:55? I mean, if I look at it frame-by-frame, I can see how it's done.LOL. Out of anything you could have asked about that vid you chose to ask about the one thing I DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH! It's the show, man. I just pulled the clip. :P Because it was in the Alex section, I wanted to really show off how fucked up she is, so the more messed up things I could find the better. That moment was really great in the show, so I just thought it fit perfectly with the bit of music. It sort of literally shakes you up. For little bits like that it usually happens as I go along ( ... )

Silly comment, but I always loved that little scene in Question Mark with Martha peeking out from behind the Doctor from The Shakespeare Code. I though it did a great job of saying, "Hey, here's Martha! Notice her!" Or something. It's nearly 2:00am. I don't know, I just find that scene very effective.

I don't know how to talk about vids! I can only go "oooh, awesome!" I do enjoy reading about it, though, so this meme seems very interesting.

LOL you're absolutely adorable at 2:00AM. :D And you're absolutely right about little Martha peeking out from behind the Doctor. However, I don't think it's in my vid! I at least can't find it, lol. But thank you nonetheless. And I'm glad your interest in vidding meta entertains you enough to comment here. Woot!

It totally is! A tiny moment in 2:26!

Wow, it will be so embarrassing if I'm wrong.

Helloooooooo!!!!!!!♥
Hey Vera!!!!Do you still have to recover from the european trip? How was the convention?
Well, this meme is too much for me...I could ask you so many things...but I should rewatch the vids right now and I can't!But I've always wanted to ask you something about HOW you get the ideas and WHAT is that particular thing that makes you decide to do a vid!Because you know...there are so many things you could do with all the material out there!
Is there some kind of "click" in your head?Because that happens to me sometimes, maybe after reading a fanfic...or watching a vid!

HIIIIIII!

Well I think I'm done recovering from the Eurotrip (yes there are more pictures to come still) but now I need to recover from Dragon*Con, lol. I'll post THOSE pics after I do all the London ones. It's so much work, man!

I've always wanted to ask you something about HOW you get the ideas and WHAT is that particular thing that makes you decide to do a vid
That's a very good question. I think it has a lot to do with the song. I mentioned in an above comment that the song really propels me to vid and it's usually a moment in the song that clicks with a particular fandom, or at least with a particular moment that I could portray in the vid. Usually I know it will be a powerful moment if I'm thinking about it and I get chills. That's the ones that I know will hit the right buttons. It's definitely during the crescendo of the song usually where I "see" the whatever moment of the vid. So yeah, a click is a good way to describe it. :) Clicks are awesome.

Ohhhh very interesting Vera, you start from a song!
You know what? When I'm listening to something beautiful and powerful the first thing I think about is how can I "use" that wonderful feeling in my paintings! And very often it's not about he lyrics,I talk about music, have you ever felt something very intense and deep only because of the notes?

Reply

hollywoodgrrl September 7 2008, 00:44:34 UTC
Yup, you got it exactly! It's like the music pulls you from the inside out and all you want to do is simulate that with your own work. And it's hardly ever the power of the lyrics at least for me. It's mainly the arrangement of the music and especially the combination of that arrangement with the singer's voice. For instance when I listen to Radiohead or Tori Amos it's the way the singers choose to perform the song that really gets me. If I feel that the song has taken over the performer as well, then I'm even more open to it. I love genuine art. :)
