Castiel isn't particularly famous, but anybody who happens to be well-versed in angelic lore might recognize his name as being associated with Thursday, November, travelers and beginnings, among other things.

In a slight twist on this, characters with canon 'esoteric' knowledge based within our own universe might well be able to recognize Cthulhoo and the Shoggies, provided they've read/heard of the right wrong books. Obviously, Cthulhoo and the Shoggies aren't historical, but, their canon is unique in that Lovecraft's shared universe approach lead to the "Cthuhlu Mythos". This universe contains many fictional books, such as Necronomicon, Pnakotic Manuscripts, Unaussprechlichen Kulten, etc, which are assumed to be 'not fictional' despite being fictional. Thus, for characters for whom it would be logical, knowledge of Cthulhoo and the Shoggies is permissible. A good example of characters who might know of them would be the Supernatural crew- they hail from our world, basically, so it can be assumed theirs contains a Necronomicon or few, and as these characters deal in esoteric matters they're the sort who'd probably have heard of it. A character from some other world like Westeros or some far-removed version of our world like Middle-Earth ( ... )

Oo. Good idea there. It might be fun to have one or two of the SPN crew to run across Cthulhoo or the Shoggies at some point.. (well, when they're grown up and not kids running amok in the Dethtower. XD

Anyone is welcome to know of Lenneth/Valkyrie. More likely knowing of the Valkyrie and that she's a god. Blah, blah, I can't really think of much except that the world can have at knowing her.

fwiw, Hrist is a Valkyrie name attested in the mythology (through eddic and skaldic poetry), but Lenneth and Silmeria appear to originate in the Valkyrie Profile jRPG universe. Likewise, the idea of three valkyries who cycle through serial reincarnation is peculiar to Valkyrie Profile. The closest the mythology comes is the notion of the three Norns, one of whom (Skuld) has a name also included in some poetic lists of valkyrie names.

On the whole, it seems like the most any non-Valkyrie Profile character could reasonably recognize about the VPverse valkyries is the term valkyrie in general and their mythological function as chooser of the slain rounding up Einherjar.

[Loves geekery]

I never got to study mythology as much as I'd like. I'm glad someone knows enough about it :3

Archangel Gabriel (SPN canon)- who quit and went renegade, spending a few millenia masquerading as various Trickster deities (Loki included). Anyone can feel free to recognize him as either. Or both.

Death (Gaiman's Endless) : Death is something of a constant and tends to transcend various 'universes'. Recognition is purely at-will.

(I'm not bloody changing the journal, I've got a tag to write)

Andrew Jackson naturally assumes people know of him, since he was president of the US at one point.
